Funny this, people hate Halo because other people love/like it or just think it's an all right game, the haters dub everyone who doesn't hate it a Halo fan boy.
The game wouldn't stand on it's own for the single player, I have a friend who bought Halo just for the multi player mode, he's never touched the campaign. The game is ok, nothing epic, but I think it's the way the story was structures, the cliff hangers and although the story line wasn't entirely original it was emmersive.
If you don't like it, fine. If you do like it, fine. If you want to hunt down any workers for Bungie/Microsoft because they aren't making another Master Cheif orientated Halo game, fine. Whatever floats your boat.

EDIT: I 'heart' the music.

Erm...Im really sorry but you are being a douchebag.

Master Chief AKA John 117 was taken as a child with 75 other children, trained until they were adults and the height of military training and perfection then genetically enhanced so they could USE the suits to give humanity a good chance at defeating the covenent.
He is a master of every weapon, vehicle and unarmed combat.
His 'stupid' name is actually a military (navy I think) rank.
If you could even be bothered reading up on stuff, he has fought for his life and thousands others on more than one occasion. In the Halo universe, he is the greatest hero humanity has and their only chance. So yeah, he is more of a hero than a normal civilian.

What I was trying to say is that a SPARTAN is more believeable as a hero who singlehandedly wins wars than a normal, easily killed soldier.
Why do I suddenly feel as though I just got a speech from a Christian?
Let me share some of my thoughts with you.
Now, right now, I'm going to tell you what I tell every Christian who's pompous enough to quote the Bible at me: "That shit does not affect those who don't believe in it."
That being said, someone who does not respect and/or like the Master Chief will not give a shit what he's done in the past, just as I don't like God, so I don't care what he's supposedly done.
Quoting what's happened in the books and arguing against someone's personal opinion makes you look like a child who has nothing better to do than protect his purchase of a completely average game that has acquired a ludicrous-sized fanbase through media and word-of-mouth hyping.
So please. If you meet another person who does not like Master Chief, don't tell them what's happened in the "Halo universe" and then tell them they have no right to say such things. Because a storyline doesn't mean shit if the other person doesn't care about the character.

Now, after all that, would you still believe that I like Halo?
In my opinion, it's a decent game, I just can't stand it when people use retarded excuses and tactics to defend it every time somebody points out its flaws.

I believe it simply filled a sci-fi niche at the right time, well being the first XBox game to have decent (not phenomenal), and easy-to-access online multilayer, which was a first for the consoles. It was simple enough to draw in crowds that weren't normally into gaming, and did an okay job at being fun.

I think it's because it was one of the few good games on the XBox, and it got popularity because it sort of put the XBox on the map.

Also, unlike Half-Life 2, it didn't involve anything resembling puzzles (you know, anything that requires thinking) and just "go here, shoot this."

If you're goingto give Freeman a weapon then the Chief get's either a BR or sniper either way gordon would be dead within seconds.
Because Gordon Freeman never uses anything apart from a crowbar and a gun. Yep. He goes through the entirety of Half-Life and Half-Life 2 (and all episodic content) without anything resembling a firearm.

The other thing people often forget about the Halos (and which we should really be grateful for) is the introduction of seamless vehicles. Seriously, I can't think of any other FPS that does vehicles as well as Halo does. It's definately one thing Halo has going over Half Life.

Ok... Not a christian... anyhoo.

It irritates me when you slate something you know nothing about. If you dont like the character fine, but when you state you dont like a character then spew off a load of crap even though you know nothing about it gets pretty annoying

Master Chief is just another cookie-cutter space marine. He is not special.
Except he's the original mold.
Please go and look up "Space Marine", and find the many, many reasons why you are wrong. Master Chief is nowhere near being the original space marine.
THANK you.

Of course, to a lot of the 15-year olds on these forums (and most of them playing games now), Halo had the first ever space marine they saw, and deny any other incarnations.

Aliens.
Warhammer.
Starship Troopers. (both the book AND the film)
Starcraft.
Doom.

Just read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_marine

Anyone else think that

is a very subtle reference to the film Doctor Strangelove? Am I the only one? Just the fact that he rides the bomb does it for me.

Because it was an enjoyable game with tonnes of replayability and a good all round package, and can be considered responsible for the popularity of the first person genre on consoles, equal to, if not surpassing the influence of Goldeneye.

no no, it's definitely because of those crazed 13-15 year old fanboys. in fact a recent post i read (maybe on joystiq) showed the average 360 user was younger than the average PS3 user
This seems a bit silly to me.

I love Halo 3 because of its PHENOMENAL multiplayer. Like how you can play splitscreen as a guest online. All games should do that. Its got great weapons, graphics, vehicles, levels, enemies, story, really everything a good first person shooter needs. Just play four player splitscreen with a few friends on one Xbox and try NOT to have fun.

Ok, so it's all the 13-15 year olds fault is it? That Halo 1 is so popular? A game that was released in 2001, when they were 5-7? Yeah I bet they fucking loved the fuck out of it.

Sorry you've lost me. A guy that has been superglued inside a green peice of plastic, given a quite frankly stupid name and had a gun thrusted into his hands and claimed king of the Noob Nations is more of a hero than some civilian given a gun fighting for their lives in a desperate attempt not to be curb stomped.
Firstly, it's a rank and not a name. Master Chief Petty Officer, shortened to "Master Chief" in daily conversation, is a non-commissioned officer in the US Navy roughly equivalent to Regimental Sergeant Major in the Marines. The character's name is actually John, though it's unused in the game series until the end of Halo 3.

Secondly, at least he's man enough to not go around exploding other people's lunches in microwaves.

I strongly suspect that if you don't do any thinking you're probably not going to succeed in Halo. (Hint; unlike elite post-human cybercops, aliens actually try to flank you.)

ARGH! Stop all the complaining about Halo!

It WAS a good game, it received critical acclaim.

It had many innovative features that it bought to the FPS genre and it was the subtle blend of them all that made it great. It is one of the best FPS games ever but as it is now 7 years old we can't really judge it by today's standards.

If you didn't like it, fine. If you did like it, fine. Everyone has the right to their opinion.

What's stupid is hating a game because of its popularity, just because lots of people like something doesn't mean it's bad, in fact, it's generally the opposite.
So what was new?
