So the new Muse album "The Resistance" is finally released, and fans can now listen to their favourite British band rocking out. I've just heard it on Spotify, and so far it's great. They haven't changed too much, but they're still exploring new things. A great move forward for them.

Have you heard it, and what do you think about it? Is it good, bad? Better, worse? Interesting, bland?

Yeah, I got my super copy on Monday, I'm enjoying it quite a bit. In some strange way, it's very different to their old albums but at the same time, it's still undoubtedly Muse.
I'm a huge Muse fan and I'm very happy with it, though I'm currently at risk of over playing the album and ruining it for a few years.

Probably going to happen to me too. Right now my favourite song is Resistance.

Firstly, I am a super-massive MUSE fan. I even bother to capitalise their name :p.

For me The Resistance marks a point of no return for MUSE. I simply cannot regard it as by the same band. The direction, the whole feel to the album is completely different.

Needless to say there will never be another Origin of Symmetry. Which as far as I'm concerned is, and now it seems will always be, their greatest album.

That's not to say I don't like The Resistance. I just don't think it even comes close to their previous stuff - I think it's in fact unfair to compare 'new-MUSE' with 'old-MUSE'.

So to avoid saying "MUSE's new album is crap (compared to their older stuff)", I say "Oh wow, what's that band new-MUSE that have just released their first album? Wow, that's pretty damn good.".

So yeah. Old-MUSE are pretty damn amazing. And from the first album of new-MUSE, they seem pretty damn good as well. But I cannot consider them the same band any more - as I say, it's unfair to compare them.

Mine to, despite it being one of their slower songs. I also really like I Belong To You. MK Ultra and Unnatural Selection are also growing on me very quickly, sounding better with every play through and they already sound pretty damned good.

I understand what you're saying, but I'd rather Muse move forward with their music as opposed to putting out near identical albums every couple of years.
I love both Origin of Symmetry and Absolution but the two albums are very similar and to be honest, I'd be disappointed if Black Holes and Revelations hadn't taken a slightly different direction.
To me, The Resistance feels like a natural progression after Black Holes and Revelations and I'm hoping that they continue this with their next album.
Until then, I'll be enjoying all of their music whenever I can and going to everyone one of their gigs I can get myself to.

Those were very wise words. I've actually just sent a copy of this to my gf who hates The Resistance. So well done ;)

Big muse fan here.

The new album (as all their albums do) has grown on me. I can listen to the whole thing through and like all the songs (although two of them just barely).

What is really missing is heavy riffage, they just aren't as guitar based as earlier stuff, not even compared with BHAR, there is no assassin or supermassive blackhole on here.

But oh well, I'm sure they will adapt it to be more guitar based live, and I am glad they are constantly changing themselves, while staying muse-sounding, also I bet there are a few songs that will be released later that didnt make the album cut. Glorious is one of my favoured songs by them, and it didn't make it onto an album.

Thank you, I try. :)
Just tell her, the old albums aren't going anywhere, we've still got them to listen to and all the best songs will continued to be played at all the Muse gigs.
Muse and Muse fans haven't lost anything with the release of The Resistance, instead we've all gained 11 new songs to add to our library. To keep us busy until the next time Matt, Chris and Dom take the stage and blow us away.

I was a huge Muse fan when I was younger and thought this album was good awful. The pretentious, poorly written lyrics left a bad taste in my mouth. The album as a whole felt disjointed. Almost as if they tried to please everyone. The vocals especially simply felt out of place in some of the tracks for me (especially on the Exogenesis symphony). I found myself laughing at how cheesy it was ("loveee is our resistanceeee" was particularly amusing) and hated how Matt spoon-fed the meaning of each song to you. To me, it felt very contrived and awkward.
