The Rock is Black Adam

WWE Superstar confirms role as a DC Comics supervillain, but not not which film will feature him

Ending months (if not years) has tweeted [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136290-Will-The-Rock-Play-Shazam] the reveal that he will play DC Comics supervillain/"antihero" Black Adam in a yet unnamed upcoming feature.

Created in 1945, Black Adam [http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Teth-Adam_(New_Earth)] is the arch enemy of Captain Marvel (aka "Shazam;") and also the hero's gone-bad predecessor from Ancient Egypt. He possesses all the superhuman (and magical) powers of Captain Marvel, making him a physical match even to powerful figures like Superman.

While a Shazam movie was among the domain names recently registered [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137207-domains-registered-for-wonder-woman-aquaman-shazam-movies] by Warner Bros, it's notable that The Rock's reveal did not include a confirmation of which film he'd be appearing in. In recent years, Black Adam has been elevated from a single-hero antagonist to a major nemesis to many heroes across the DC Universe.

Don't mind, he suits the character a lot and will be cool the see the rock destroy people with ancient lightning. Could of maybe gone a bit international with the casting but I surprise the Rock is a good brand.

(Hey I even like him in the scorpion king)

The Rock has the least threatening face I have ever seen. Its so hard for me to take him seriously as a villain, even when he is thicker than a redwood. Its that dazzling white smile and those big eyes and a face that looks like it just had a spa treatment.

I understand wanting to play against type, but he's really gonna have to do some convincing to make me fear him as a villain.

I think he would very well suited as a hero character, he has so much charisma on screen, but whatever, still looking forward to it

I think he's pretty well cast. He can't look like the devil himself if they're doing the thing where he makes his own nation on Earth or whatever(If this turns out to be Shazam's villain I'm a bit disappointed, it's no fun to have villains that have the exact same powers as their counterparts. )

Good to hear that that whole Hercules thing didn't kill his major movie role prospects. I really like him in most of what I've seen him in and the few times he's really failed generally weren't something I'd specifically note as being his fault.

Yet another strange choice by DC. While the Rock can play a villain his whole appeal is mostly rooted in playing good guys and anti heroes.

Wonder if they will fit him into BvS? lol. All joking aside im not sure they will have him in his own movie. Unless they are making a Shazam movie then im betting he will be a credits character in BvS and then be in Justice League.

very interesting. Though again, it's weird how they don't mention WHICH film he'll be appearing in. At the very least Johnson finally has something to do; most of his action roles have freaking SUCKED.

It's funny, I think that Shazam would be the one hero that could save the DC movies. It is the very definition of a power fantasy of a young kid, and would bring some much needed levity to the DC movieverse.

Honestly I don't think its that hard. Yes he does have a very welcoming face and a shoot to kill smile (seriously I would kill to have a smile like that) but his physique is so imposing. I'm sure he could pull it off.

They could just impose him as a threat by his actions rather than his face. Tom Hardy did it with Bane even, and he had a rather posh voice.

This is true. If nothing else WB at least has learned how to cast its villains Green Lantern not withstanding. Jesse is going to have to do the same thing as Lex but I'm not too worried because Jesse is a good actor. He could pull off a younger looking Lex Luthor. The Rock has his size luckily so with proper direction he could be a great villain. I just hope this movie is in a DC Cinematic Universe as there are rumors saying it is not.

I honestly think that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson,I literally cannot say his name any other way, will be a perfect fit for the role, 'ell he even looks like Black Atom to begin with. As for whether or not he will make a good villain will be up to whoever is writing and directing the piece. I wonder if they will go the full on villain route with Black Atom, or perhaps his usual anti-villain role?

Called it.

Don't know why everyone was so quick to assume he'd play Shazam.

I mean his skin tone alone screamed Black Adam. That and his teaser quote was 'go toe-to-toe with superman'.

I'm actually a lot happier with this than if he was playing Shazam. Makes more sense.

I don't think the Rock has played a villain since his screen debut in The Mummy Returns (and even then, his villainy was basically his growling face being duck taped to a really bad CGI scorpion body).

Wonder how long its going to take before someone who knows nothing of the character starts calling racism over the rock playing a character with "black" in the name
