And by informing you that two people were shot out of a country of millions, you gained what exactly?

Some posters already said it.
There are tragedies happening on the world every single day. When something "magical" like this happends, it's a good distraction from all the sad stories we see. Give us hope to see, although the world is under a dark storm, there's a glimpse of light shining somewhere.

I'm a bit tired about the wedding being thrown on our faces every second but it's still nice to see a happy story. I only watched it to see the horsies though. :3

I've gotta say, I'm glad the news is showing something happy for once.

And it's history in the making, seeing the wedding of the future King of my country.

And for people who are anti-monarchy due to cost, etc. should watch this:

Don't blame the wedding, blame the media that is reporting on it.

And to be honest? I don't care about how much attention it's getting, it's nice to have something to celebrate for once, instead of all the usual doom and gloom.

It's for one day, but I'll be sure to pass on the message to the next royal who gets married, not to do so on a day when bad shit happens.
I'm not blaming the wedding i'm just dissapointed that such important things are being ignored.
I don't think you understand how the news works nowadays. They want ratings as much as any other show. They figure people would rather tune in for happy, pointless news than anything usefull and they're probably right. That's why the mainstream news media is mostly useless in this day and age.

Before I begin let me first say that I am trying to write this without sounding like at total douchebag.......so onwards and impending wall of text.

The royal wedding between Kate and Wills has taken the world by storm. Even months before they're even preparing the media had gone into a giant shit storm gushingover what they'll wear, who's invited blah blah blah. I come from Australia and yes we are still under the queens monarchy, the news corporations and TV stations are having a field day (or month)with this of course. Almost every five minutes our most watched, most credible news sources are doing some story about the wedding. Be it honeymoon locations, dress sense and even how to behave when having tea with her majesty as I type this they are streaming live coverage of the wedding on every station.

While I have gotten rather tired (and i'm not the only one thinking this) of hearing all about the wedding I completely understand that this is a big moment in the monerchy and it's a once in a shit ton of years event so I understand that it is important to many people even if you aren't of the commonwealth (americans i'm looking at you). My problem is not with the wedding at, let them be happy and I wish them the best sure. I'm just really pissed over what else is happening in the world and the lack of attention it's receiving.

The first of what should be breaking news:

1. As mentioned before I am Australian and last night in the state capital city of Adelaide a gunman had started a siege armed with firearms. Several people were severely injured, two police officers were shot and two civillians were killed.

2. Powerful hurricanes have battered America, people have died and others lost their homes.

3. Suicide bombers have destroyed a cafe in Morroco taking the lives of twenty people and severly injuring many more.

These are just three of the recent horrible things that have happened in the world and normally they would be receiving coverage, informing us and keeping us up to date. However, turn on any news station, read any news site and what is the main story? The freaking royal wedding. There are disasters, bombings, shootings and all they care about is the wedding. I for one am disgusted. How did we become such a society that we idolise and hold dear these so called fairytale moments when so much has gone on in the matter of a few days.

I'm going to stop rambling now and pass it on to you. What are your views fellow escapists? Are you tired of this wedding, do you share the same feelings, discuss away. And if I have offended or upset anyone than I am sorry and I hope this dosn't make me look like a troll.
You now understand why I only watch TV for Two and a Half men, Doctor Who and Big Bang Theory. I learn about most of the disasters happening in the world through internet adverts (Usually donation requests) and the radio. If news station spent around 3 minutes outlining what has happened, and then moved on, I'd be happy. Instead, they spend those three minutes explaining what is going on, then add another 5-10 talking about it. I know that this is probably what people want, but I can form my own opinions about current events. I don't need the news to tell me what they should be.

In answer to the threads title: Oh look, a distraction!

That video is a load of rubbish. The lands don't belong to the Royal family, we are LOSING £40,000,000 a year in order to pay to use our own lands? The tourism industry does NOT focus on the Royals.

The fact that they are somehow owed respect from birth disgusts me.

Firstly- I couldn't care less about the wedding. It is absolutely impossible for me to be any less interested in the wedding than I am now.

That said, I am sick and tired of the news networks focusing all of their energies on the doom and gloom of the world. It's always the wars, crime, disease etc every. Single. Night. Every day, we have scientific innovation, new perspectives open on our world, stories of incredible luck, compassion and humour, yet these events and research, every bit as world changing as that skirmish in war-torn-wherever, are never shown. If the news decides to focus on a wedding for a change, then I say it's about bloody time!

Now they just have to stop broadcasting stories with such a heavy handed bias towards one side or the other, and it may gain a bit of legitimacy in my eyes.

Watching it now and seeing how happy its making people leads me to disagree. Yeah there's terrorist attacks everyday, I knew about florida and marakesh. its about time we had some good fucking news on british tv... its nothing but reporting misery because its gets more views. and now they've found something thats positive and get even more.
blame the institutions, i could care less about the monarchy but I wish them the best. and the same to any victims anywhere in the world.

I dont know about half the shit that goes on in the world and neither does anyone else.

Sometimes it's good to focus on the nice things in life. Of course, it can also be taken too far, which some news networks undoubtly have done.

Imagine if she says I don't that'll be funny as hell.

OT: Nope don't really care, I have more important things to do than listen/watch a freaking wedding happening on TV. Plus I hate the BS statements that people keep saying about the wedding. That its going to be a 'historical event of great importance' or 'its taken the world by storm'. No, no it hasn't. [sub]No offence to the OP though for using one of the statements.[/sub]

Looks like you got your wish (to an extent). After reading this I thought I would go on the BBC website and take a look at the wedding. But the live feed is now covering a suicide bombing in Morrocco. Back to the usual schedule!

People were moaning at me for sleeping through the wedding and not caring about it. It's clearly just a distraction, and pliticians were making use of it really. I remember people were questioning Cameron earlier this year for releasing some bad news regarding cuts I think it was on the same day the wedding was announced.

Now I'm not saying that I blame William and Kate themselves for this. I don't, I fully blame the press for it, and their constant reporting of every single thing that they do. The press just seemed to relegate them to a celeb couple, reporting every single detail, I care not about. I really don't think I would have minded the wedding, and I may have even watched it had I not been drowned with information before hand.

Oh for god's sake, we all know there are trajedies that happen everyday, far worse than the ones you've mentioned OP, look at Sri Lanka and Libya, massacures and rape, but this is something to enjoy, for once in our shoddy lives we can remember something on the news that was pleasant and that people were happy over.

For every briton that will tune into this, one will not

http://m.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2011/0429/breaking8.htm?via=latest

Where im from, the only reason some people are watching is to see what people are wearing, beyond that no one seems to care. kinda unneighbourly of us i guess :S

I'm just glad that there is some good news for a change, If the media only reported bad news, I'd kill myself! I know where you're coming from, but I think it's better to have rolling news on a positive event that will last a day than a negative one (i.e. Libia) that just goes on for weeks with very slight developments.

If you truly can't stand the wedding, just tough it out for today and it'll all blow over by tomorrow. Besides, I'm not complaining since they made today a bank holiday and I get the day off!

I'm English and frankly I think the wedding is just been hyped to improve their image.

Yes Wills and Kate probably do want to marry for love etc but the Media are using it to sell papers, the Royals are using it to improve their image, companies are using it to sell themed crap and the government are using it to hide bad news.

'In the years to come Britain will see massive cuts and job losses unheard of in generations but look two barely important people with no political power or proper significance other than being relatives to the outdated monarch are getting married yay!'

Personally I think the Royals do assist Britain in improving our image and creating personal ties with other world leader that the Prime Minister is too busy to do but all that is off-set by the casual racism, the drug scandals and the absolute waste of public money. Personally I won't be watching the wedding live I will instead be using my day off to do something productive all the while praying that something interesting will happen- a streakier runs past the Cathedral, a mop of protestors, even just someone making a massively public gaff right in the middle of it all. That's what I'm waiting for.
