Ever.

It can certainly enhance scariness, but on it's own it's just music.

I'm sorry, the correct answers were the soundtrack to American McGee's Alice by Chris Vrenna and the original Diablo soundtrack.

In all honesty listening to the soundtrack for both games while alone and in the dark, late at night as it is right now, I'm getting chills! Nice!

This music scarred me as a kid when I first heard it:

Not so scary now but it does still remind me of creepy clown music.

Probably Dead Space, though it isnt music in the traditional sense.
Except for DS's rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star...

And S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has some creepy as hell ambiance, though as someone above said it often isnt effects and stuff not which are not actual occuring somewhere in game, but stuff that is, lots of gunfire could either be ambiance or a massive battle a few hundred metres away.

The most convincing disturbing music is the music that blends into a scenario so well that you didn't realize there was a soundtrack; a rare state of total immersion.

Music or Ambiance?

Music is not scary. Music can help enhance the experience once the actual creepy stuff happened (to keep the blood pumping), but I've yet to find an actual music score in a game that worked me up more than the ambiance sounds.

Ambiance is tightly woven into the narrative of a game. Someone mentioned Twinkle Twinkle Little Star from Dead Space: That is ambiance sound woven into the narrative of the game, even though in a traditional sense it's still music. But replace it with an ordinary "creepy sound track" and the whole thing loses its punch.

... so to cut this short: I'd rather hear the characters hurried footsteps, the labored breathing and the staccato beat of his/her heart, than listen to a jumbled together mess of electronic chores trying to sound "freaky" (the Silent Hill stuff posted earlier).

The music the Oddworld Abe's Odysee and Oddworld Abe's Exodus. It isn't specifically scary but it is creepy, especially when you play in the dark

The following is the creepiest music I've heard in a video game:

I agree with this. Metroid Fusion has probably the best soundtrack ever produced for a GBA game.

Anything from the original Tomb Raider. That used to shit me up every time the music started up in that game, though you usually were also getting attacked by a fucking bear or a pack of rapters or fireball hurling alien zombies or something at the same time, which probably made it worse.

Also Silent Hill, when you first enter the demonic school. I stopped playing there.

Lavender town laughs at other games' futile attempts of making scary music.

I'll agree with a few other posters and say, Metroid Fusion had some amazingly awesome, yet scary, music and sound.

The chase scene music when the SA-X knows you're there. Scared the shit out of a primary school aged me.

The creepy background music as the SA-X's boots echoed throughout the halls of BSL as it walked past, and you hid in a tight space in order to avoid death. Also scared primary school aged me.

Great game, though.
