Unless there is money involved, or some trash talking. I'm not that competitive when it comes to gaming.

Halo, in most game types, was never about skill. Skill also take a backseat to connection types, server type, and the game in question. With all the lag time in between it's hard to say "This guy is awesome, but that guy sucks."

My current view of multiplayer gaming:

If I here "legitimate strategy" mentioned by anyone, I'm out (for one thing, it's not a god-damn strategy, it's a tactic, there's a difference).

Competition is fun with friends at times, like system link and split screen and the like, competitiveness is a natural thing, I guess its cool to just roll with it at times when it can make things fun and more interesting.

However, the whole idea of MLG and competitive gaming in general annoys the hell out of me.

I play games, I play them ALOT but being competitive when its with strangers and not enjoyable is just dumb to me.

What exactly do games require anyway?

Pushing buttons and keys, skill doesnt make any sense to me, like oh whopdie do you shot a virtual dude, so what?

Everyone here obviously loves a good game, I dont see anything wrong with that.

I do see things wrong when someone starts thinking their ability to push buttons makes them superior to all others.

It's that spirit of ruthless competition that has kept me away from online multiplayer since the heyday of Diablo 2, with the exception of private L4D2 games with my brother. It seems like everybody is either a sore winner or sore loser.

For me, I have two basic category of games that I play. The games that I feel are overall fun, and make for good time wasters, then there's the games where I take it a little more seriously.

The competitive type games are the ones that stick to the basics, the ones that don't oversaturate your game with bells and whistles. A firm believer in Less Is More when it comes to competitive play. Games like Quake, where you run around, pick up your weapons, and shoot things. For Quake, I play for the rush, and the fun comes along to. For other games, like, say, Minecraft, I play to relax a little, take time to enjoy something at my own pace.

That's my take on things, anyways.

I have better things to do with my time than make my leisure into a job. That's my view, plain and simple. If a game's too easy, I just file it in with, "Tweaks that could have improved the game" in my head.

That's a big deterrent for me too. Sometimes I want to play with others but don't want to furrow my brow and drown myself in mountain dew. Get the wrong people and you either are forced to or you just won't have any fun at all.

I think video-game enthusiasts who go to great length to label themselves 'hardcore' aren't having as much fun as they want to believe they are. The less you care about your individual stats, the better, in my view.

Team Fortress 2 epitomises this.
