As for my opinion on the actual smiley (not emoticons) I think it's fantastic that something which was dreamed up to promote corporate whoredom was completely stolen by the rave music. Something which was supposed to be a cynical marketing/customer service tool is now inextricably linked with Acid (the drug) Acid House and Rave, Ecstacy.

Brilliant subversion. Only slightly less satisfying than seeing a Christian Church near me which has been bought by Sikhs and now bares a huge Sikh symbol on the front.

It is about as useful as plenty of other punctuation. I sometimes use it, and its useful to imply a limited degree of tone. It's hardly professional language, but it is helpful in casual, text based chatting.
