Hello there again all, The Snooty Englishman here again with The Snooty Review.
This time i will be reviewing and discussing the latest Square Enix release for the PSP...Dissidia Final Fantasy. This is a one on one fighting game spanning the Final Fantasy universe.
Firstly the story: This time round we are shown that Chaos, the god of discord or disorder, is at war with Cosmos, the goddess of harmony. Instead of the two fighting each other there are 10 representatives chosen to fight for them. 10 for Chaos and 10 for Cosmos.
Here are the fighters, for both sides, that appear in the game:
Characters:
Heroes
Warrior of Light- from the first Final Fantasy, this grey-haired lad dons a blue and yellow suit of armor with shield and spear. He also has a helmet with giant horn like objects. Uses light based attack on his opponent
Firion- from Final Fantasy II. this lad has orange colored hair also dons some armor and carries several weapons some of which are hard to see with the exception of the bow and arrow, his most popular one.
The Onion Knight- from Final Fantasy III. A spritely youth with blonde hair, wears half a suit of armor and puffy pants that are both red. His helmet is also red with white feathers sprouting out the back. Carries a small sword
Cecil- from Final Fantasy IV. This guy seems to have a bit of a dual personality. On one side he's a white paladin of light. The other side he's a knight of darkness (my personal favorite side). He often swtiches between the two depending on whether you use aerial or ground attacks.
Bartz- from Final Fantasy V. Another excitable lad he is a mimic type warrior who takes exisiting attacks and add his own little twist to them. He wears a tunic and a golden shoulder pad which makes him look like Pit from Kid Icarus a little bit.
Terra- from Final Fantasy VI. A worrysome girl who has incredible magic powers that are quite destructive yet has no idea of what she's done in the past or anything.
Zack whoops sorry i mean Cloud- from the very popular Final Fantasy VII. A blond spikey-haired pretty boy with deep emotional problems (play Crisis Core to find out more), he carries a very giant sword known as the Buster Sword (which isnt his again play Crisis Core) that he uses to the point of chipping.
Squall- from Final Fantasy VIII. A loner mercenary with brown hair and a Gun Blade. Uses many explosive like attack that combine both the gun and sword. He can come of as a bit of ass but in the end he wants the company of his friends.
Zidane- from Final Fantasy IX. Another energetic youth fellow with blonde hair and a fancy vest on and also has a monkey tail. He carries two medium-sized blades and performs many close-range and medium range attacks.
Tidus- from Final Fantasy X. Another blonde haired pretty boy like Cloud. However his personality is affected by his father who constantly berated him in order to make him train and become stronger. Don't really see how that works but whatever i'll run with it, his weapon of choice is a sword which appears to bubble that was given to him by a friend named Wakka.
that was the heroes now here's the other half
Villains
Garland- FF I. A man clad in armor with a long blue cape and a helmet horns he may have borrowed from the Texas Longhorn animal. His weapon is a sword that can be split into two separate parts and have very devastating attacks at close range.
The Emporer- FF II. A lad who appears to be a lakers fan with his purple and gold armor and clothing and whose hair looks like he had it done by David Bowie from his time in the 80's. His weapon is a staff that cast trap spells to draw his enemies in then blast them.
Cloud of Darkness- FF III. Lady who like to be nude with the exception of a claw that covers one breat and a red dot that covers the other. Her weapons are magic like attacks and two little demon like thing that resemble the darkness only they're yellow.
Golbez- FF IV The brother of Cecil dons a dark suit of armor and a giant blue cape. He also has a face covering helmet. A warlock that has many devastating attacks that cover a good amount of ranges.
Exdeath- FF V Another armor-clad gentleman who constantly utters about "the Void". he carries a sword that unleashes big attacks. However he moves very slow and this brings down the powers a bit.
Kefka- FF VI. A quite insane fellow who dresses like a clown. He's a magic user of all the elements and has some close range attacks as well. He moves around in bouncy fashion and mutters crazy words and phrases. He's my personal fav character.
Sephiroth- FF VII. A good guy gone bad after seeing what became of his mother, wears a trenchcoat with armored shoulder pads. His weapons is a long sword that can give major hurt. To add he has speed and is quite the artful dodger when fought against.
Ultimecia- FF VII A sindel like woman only without the shrill voice. She has hair done up to look like horns and wears a feather coat and has tattoos on her face and body. This crazy fires off projectiles and can mess with time which can be quite a pain.
Kuja- FF IX. Gray-haired wears a cape and a thong and some big boots. He's a thespian who like to use theater terms in his dialogue. His attack include various projectiles of energy which can do some damage.
Jecht- FF X. The father of Tidus had various scars among his body and carries a large sword of almost Buster Sword like proportions. Main attacks are mainly melee attacks with his sword and feet. Another favorite of mine.
Battle modes.
there are four ways in which to play and they all have ways to help you improve your skill.
Story Mode- In this you select one of the ten heroes and play through their particular story and at the end confront the corresponding villain at the end. Throughout the stories you will receive items and earn experience to make your character stronger.
Arcade Mode- In this you select a villain or a hero and are put through a gauntlet of 5 opponents each increasing a slight difficulty. There is also a hard mode i have yet to play.
Quick Battle- Choose either a hero or a villain and face an opponent of your choice in a quick one on one fight. This help you level up the particular character you chose and had the abilities and items you acquired in Story mode.
Communication Mode- Battle a friend who also has the game on their PSP. You can also level up here.
Gameplay
The combat is fairly good and has you trying to bring your opponents points down to 0. To do this you must build up 'Bravery Points' and then use your attack to bring down your opponents Hit Points. Besides attack you can call upon summons that can affect your bravery in various ways from adding it up, taking some away, shielding etc. Overall the system works and helps the battles go by very quickly allowing you to play more and more making your character that much stronger in the process.
During the battles you can gather "ex force" and "Ex Cores" which powers up a meter and when full allows the character to go into EX Mode that gives you an overpowered attack like the Smash Bros in Brawl did.
Conclusive Recollections.
I can faithfully say this is the only other FInal Fantasy game i've played besides Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus. Some parts of the story started to run together near the end but it happens. Most of the time the enemies made me wanna toss my PSP against the wall but i perservered and made it through the fight. Again if i must give this game a score i'll say an 8 out of 10
