I like giving all of my fleets, but I feel just having "1st Survey Fleet" or "3rd Battle Fleet" is kind of boring.

Therefore, I want to give them more specific names such as "1st Survey Fleet "Sagittarius"

I was thinking of naming all of my survey fleets after Zodiac Signs.

But what theme should I go with for battle fleets, construction flotillas, and colonization groups?

In fact, I think I need a new name for each type of fleet, construction flotilla just doesn't sound right!

And what about specialized combat fleets, like for sieges, or small fleets? Should I call them groups? Wolfpacks?!

And then what will be the theme for each their unique names!?!?!

And that isn't even considering ship classes, although I think I have made headway on that one.

All cruiser battle classes (this includes blazers, mass drivers, armor, war) will be named after Gods of war.

All Dreadnoughts will be named after famous forts and castles.

All Leviathans will be named after the realm of Gods' (Valhalla, Olympus, that's all I can think of...)

But that does not cover battle riders, or support cruisers, or drones, or BLEHHHH THIS GAME IS COMPLICATED ENOUGH AS IT IS! WHY AM I IMPOSING MORE COMPLICATIONS!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I need help. I don't even know how to use half the features in this game properly and I'm pulling my hair out over this.

Please help before someone gets hurt....

I personally liked the old British way of naming warships (right up until the Flower-class corvettes ruined it all). Stuff like HMS Terror, or the modern SLBM HMS Vengeance (even more badass if you consider what an SLBM does).

Yeah, but I feel that an empire consisting of all human ethnicity should have a more diverse naming scheme and on a more epic level, if that makes sense.

I'm crap at naming things like that.

I've played various types of games where i've had to name vehicles, fleets and people.

I've had Bob, Fred, Pete, Dave and various other names.

The HMS Bob I had in Star Trek Online is still my favourite.

I had an idea for a story set in the far future where all the ship names are slightly altered versions of Hindu/Aryan (that's early Persia people, don't panic) gods. If you ever pick up the Vedas or Upanishads you'll see their concept of deities could sometimes read like Lovecraft. Unfathomable cosmic horrors and the like. I still try to always name at least one ship Indra or Rudra.

Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile. I have an uncle that used to serve on the USS Wyoming (SSBN-742). They had an "open house" of sorts many moons ago when I was just a little kid where the crew could take a family member out on the submarine, and it was freaking awesome. I still have my crew hat.

Badass, indeed.

Think of it like this: the British took a vessel designed to nuke the hell out of things in case of a first strike against the land-based Bomber Command assets (wiping out the British government and people)...and then, just to make the point a little bit clearer, they called the ship Vengeance.

Well, there's always assorted deities and myths. You could really tailor the names to the ships using those, too. Hunter-killer ships named after the Erinyes, a missile cruiser named Chulainn, etc...

Am I the only one here who likes to name his fleets "1st Atlantic fleet",etc. Adds to the military immersion for me.
Not at all. It's even better for games such as Hearts of Iron III, which require a lot of military micromanagement. That, and you get to assign generals and admirals at the level of division and above.

Smaller ships don't need naming, unless they're scout units. Intermediate-level ships rarely need to be named anything other than the default. But capital ships are the pride of the navy, and should be named with some care. And fleets need to be appropriately named for organisational purposes, naturally.

This isn't space, but I name my EU3, Victoria 2, and Hoi 3 fleets according to their function and geography. North Sea Battle Fleet, Indian Patrol Fleet, II Supply Fleet, etc. I don't like having to keep changing names, so I only usually name something geographically if I intend on keeping it stationed in one region for a long time. Same goes with land forces. Can't have the 1st North American Army all the way over in India.

and

http://yenlowang.free.fr/warhammer-forum/BFG/BFG_-_Additional_Ships_Compendium_1.4.pdf

The PDF's contain both class names and names of famous ships of each class such as

Flame of Purity, Sword of Retribution and Cypra Probatii as Overlord Battlecruisers for a herioic example,

Bringer of Despair, Bloodied Sword, and Foe-Reaper as Repulsive Class Grand Cruisers for a not so heroic example.

I'm rather partial to the name Killfrenzy, mainly due to fluff that it would broadcast its name repeatedly across all channels.

As for fleet formations I would just put a letter in front of each 'fluff' name so that 'S Overlord' would be a siege fleet and 'D Retribution' would be a defence group.

I play Battlefleet Gothic and Space Fleet. I don't name fleets so much as name each ship in a squadron on related themes and ships in a battlegroup have slightly looser related themes and the battlegroup named after the biggest ship.

So we have:

Battlegroup Nodens (Celtic/proto celtic and northern european gods, legends etc)

Wihtlaeg, Wecta, Wihtgils frigates
Andarta, Agrona, Andraste frigates
Belatu-Cadros Cruiser
Woden, Nodens, Belatu-Dunom Battlecruisers

Scout group Kharkov

Dresden, Koln, Hamburg, frigates
Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Prokhorovka, frigates
Karkhov, cruiser

Battlegroup Vanguard (generally greek and roman myth etc, also some RN names)

Clypeus, Bitis, Viper, Naja, Venenatus, Aspidis, Krait, Coralium, Levis, Anvil destroyers
Scylla, Sirius, Sentinel frigates
falx, ferrum, furor destroyers
Calliope, cocidius, castor, comus frigates
Amphion, Arethusa light cruisers
Bellerophon, cruiser
Arcae Regnum, battlecruiser
Vanguard, battleship

Battlegroup Victoria

Albion, Agricola light cruisers
Victoria, Praetoria, Suetonius-Paulinus, cruisers

Battlegroup Ira Dei ...Latin derived, beginning with I

Impervious light cruiser
Implacable, cruiser
Invictus, battlecruiser
Iusta Vindicta grand cruiser
Ira Dei battleship

I do play galactic Civ II and made ships that look like the ones in Battlefleet gothic, but AFAIK you can only name the design, not the individual ships or fleets.
