The Switch 2 came out last week and man there was a lot of hype around how crazy it would be to get one. Pre-orders sold out at many places, and it was looking like it was going to be crazy difficult to get a hold of one. Except then retailers got like a ton and you can walk into anywhere you want to get one basically, except Gamestop because they suck.

So i have a Switch 2 now and it is a lot like the Switch 1, in fact it's so similar I bet if I posted screenshots of the hub screen for both systems, you couldn't tell the difference.

So many new features! Including a button that requires a subscription to use.

I want to say The Switch 2 is a massive upgrade, but Nintendo is so strange with their graphical tricks that I guess it is. Mario Kart runs fine, besides being a completely barebones and empty Mario Kart game. I managed to beat all the single player content in Mario Kart in 3 hours. So that's cool.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet got a Switch 2 patch that I tested and yeah the game runs like it should have two years ago because now the Switch 2 is overpowering the restrictions. It all feels very strange because despite power complaints of the Switch 1, the Switch 2 continues to make that mistake by still being underpowered. It's better don't get me wrong, it is more powerful than the Switch 1, but it's just as behind on power compared to today's standards as the Switch 1 was back in 2017. So for now, it'll be fine and it'll get a lot of ports early on, but in three years when we're talking Ps6 and what not, the Switch 2will once again just be Nintendo's...thing that exists and plays some stuff.

The problem I think the Switch faces is that right now it's doing nothing that the Switch 1 isn't, especially if you have an OLED Switch. At least plays all the Switch 1 games. That's really all I can say about it. It's the Switch 1 but stronger, and it'll now play ports of 5-6 year old Ps5 games. Awesome.

Don't waste the money until games come out, and maybe not even then.

What they have announced right now just doesn't convince me. Donkey Kong And Metroid Prime 3 look good but they're not enough to sell me on the console. I don't need better hardware to play indie games on.

Yeah, can't say I'm really feeling the Switch 2 right now. Higher price for both the system and a lot of the games, worse battery life than my Switch 1, worse screen than my oled, not region free, and some other minor annoyances. The current slate of games isn't doing it for me either, and no Wii U ports to fill out the release schedule anymore either.

Right now, I'm in camp "maybe in a year or two"

I haven't touched my Switch in ages, and with the direction that Nintendo games are going ( kinda just pragmatic toys now) I see very little incentive to acquire a Switch 2.

Same.
Sterling on the Switch 2.

  • The only positives of note are the performance boosting rate for certain first and third party games. The charge deck being really good too.
  • It feels that the price of the console and the games themselves are too high and not worth the justification. It's already been noted that Nintendo said the tariffs have nothing to do with the price hike.
  • The paid tech demo can screw off to according to Sterling. Since the game's on, there are nothing but cheap looking and glorified flash browser games. None of the charm of the Astrobot, tech demo.
  • Sterling is not disappointed but frustrated and feels that this is just a lowering of the bar of standards from the AAA video game industry. With the possibility of a lot more publishers, justifying a price hike on already expensive games. We've already seen this with microsoft making the Series X cost more, along with its games.
I can't blame Sterling for feeling this way, nor anyone else. I said before, I will get Switch 2 about 1.5-2 years later down the line, when I buy it used and refurbished from GameStop or Disc Replay.

Hey, it’ll play whatever Nintendo makes and might even be able to run GTA6 whenever it comes out.

By this point, either you can get COD running on these things or not. Considering Doom 4 ran well on OG Switch, COD on Switch 2 should be easier by comparison. Best of luck to all parties.

Digital Foundry is really loving Mario Kart World for its art style and visual fidelity. They have a comparison video with MK8 and MKW on each side of the screen. It's a pretty in-depth look and is about 25 minutes long.

Sales seem pretty good. That kinda surprises me. I didn't think they'd be awful since the brand value is too strong, but Nintendo made a lot of bad judgement calls. Rather than hype I mostly saw very deserved negativity. I suspected, if not a Wii U situation than at least a 3ds situation, where Nintendo released an overpriced console with too little launch games, and that they'd need a good humbling before getting their act together.

Ps5 had ffxvi when I decided to get it, and then got wukong and stellar blade and astro bot and so on. I guess we have to wait a few years here too.
That’s the catch. It’s always nice to have the new hardware, but slim pickings at launch are the norm. There are some gems though. As a kid the N64 was double awesome since Mario 64 was fucking amazing out the gate.

Back in the day you had a major leap between consoles so they had those launch titles to showcase why a new console is worth getting but now that most games are still able to run in the last gen too and the leap is more like a skip between gens, mainly improving things like framerate and performance, I guess having a game go right at launch is less important than having a game that fully takes advantage of a system's new power a few years down the line.

I’ve decided that I’m only upgrading when the first Switch 2 only Pokémon game that isn’t a Legends title comes out.

Correct me if I misremember, but I believe the original Switch was released with very few lucrative titles and they only started dripping in half a year later.

Since the 3DS at least had an additional added feature (3D) that is not just "the same but with better graphics" I think of it more as a Gameboy advance situation. At least in terms of public perception, Switch 2 is probably seen as "the same but better".

Not sure, I think it got a new zelda pretty soon, which is good enough in my book.

But yeah the 3DS was pretty bad too, I had to wait until smt4 was out to get one.
