I recently watched the latest AVGN on GameTrailers.com, and actually felt strongly for this awesome contest that was cut short. Regardless of whether you like AVGN or not, I would like the fine minds of the Escapist to share their opinions.

This art thine video. [http://www.gametrailers.com/video/angry-video-screwattack/61988#new_comment]

So, converse! Do you think the contest should be rebooted, with something along the lines of an XBLA/PSN downloadable game (or an actual Atari 2600 game), or should we just leave it all in the past?

With the budget they have today for games, I think it could be possible for some marketing campaign like that. For the game itself, it's too late for that.

You might suggest it to whoever was in charge of the marketing of Dante's inferno. He'll probably run with it.

Heh, imagine what would happen if modern games today did the same thing. Like if the Army of Two three contest winner got their very own jewel-encrusted AK-47.

Or just Saddam Hussein's.

HOLY SHIT! A topic on an AVGN video I just seen yesterday.

I say restart it. Replace all the won prizes. Also remake the games and game equipment. Make sure there is NO DIFFERENCE between the 3 platforms. (Wii not invited)

Lets start this epic quest.

Well see back in the day, like AVGN said, they didn't have the internet. So once someone finds a clue, posts it on the internet then EVERYONE has it. So while it'll be cool to get a prize to be the first to find all the easter eggs that add up to a prize, it kinda seems crippled now. =[

I'd definitely like to see another contest along those lines, rather than another Halo-CoD-GoW competition.

It's a nice thought but in the age of the internet it wouldn't quite work as everyone would cheat.

P.S-If you really want the missing items go to the guy that bought Atari's house and steal them yourself

At this point, it's a bit moot. They already had two winners, and it's highly unlikely those guys will give those prizes back to restart this idea.
In any event, considering the amount of development we're talking about here, then you'd have to consider at least three years before the first game came out, and subsequently every year after that for three more years they would have to release another game... quite an undertaking.
And I'm not sure that Atari really has the money in their budget to do a project of this magnitude in our current economy.
But hey, it's not like Atari has anything else really going big for it right now, it could just be the thing they need to shine a little light on them. If you can afford to wait long enough to play a MUCH updated version of the game, then I'd say why not?

While your point is very valid, who would post them on the internet if it hurts their chances of getting a jewel encrusted silver sword? Just sayin'. Plus, they wouldn't put the contest out there for very long, due to the internet problem.

I'm pretty sure that a competition of that magnitude would be exceedingly controversial in this day in age. I mean a guy was stabbed (or shot, I forget) over a PS3, I'm pretty sure a modern day treasure hunt would end in several deaths. Sad to say, shame the company went under before the competition was finished.

Another problem is that people would most likely find clue or ways of cheating by data mining the game. Yea they had the whole find it in the manual or whatever but people had to play for clues, but you could theoretically mine for those clues and solve the puzzle faster.

I think we should make a Museum for the History of Video Games. We put versons of old and extinct counsoles, famous and innovative games, sections on programing and genres, and finally, Gaming Paraphenailia.

Then, we hunt down the five treasures from the Treasure Quest Games and put them in a special exibit with the Gaming Paraphenalia, with the two winners getting special recognition. But not before we pay Harrison Ford to be filmed on camera with the sword saying "This belongs in a museum!"

As for a reboot, no. The internet has ruined the experience of such a multi-fasceted puzzle (see Stolen Pixels). It was innovative at the time and probably one hell of a rush for the people who participated, but it's just undoable now as is.

The annoying thing, is the budget for all the games AND the prizes is STILL less then most the shite we get these days.

One way to bypass the internet problem... Use the internet! If the last game was an actual MMO with people fighting inside it in real time to collect all the clues, people theoretically would not have time to either post clues on the web, or efficiently find them before someone else unravels the mystery further for themselves. And of course the first one to find all of them would surely claim the prize. The publisher would also be able to employ server logs to verify success for each player, or use its tools to create an even more interactive mystery for an epic experience.

Am i smart or what?

Hmm true, but still even if you were going to cut down on the time so it cannot spread throughout the internet, it would need to be something like a week. Because you know when EVERYONE works and works and picks away at one part then just 1 person posts it, then everyone has a chance at it.

I would love to see a prize for something like this, but you know it would be so hard to pull it off =[

I believe that sword belongs to the king of the nerds, Jack Tramiel needs to get the contest going again and the king must be found.
