recently i've noticed that so-called 'teaser' trailers have been on the rise... big name sequel games like Bioshock 2, Modern Warfare 2, Ratchet and Clank Future: a Crack in Time and now Assassin's Creed 2 have all used these trailers to debut their games.

I personally find them very annoying - yes, they do contain suprising amounts of imformation, but you have to really analyse them quite deeply to be able to find the smallest snipets of info... they are awful, and seem a bit lazy to me - why not satisfy the masses with a bit of gameplay, or at least some CG/in-game cutscenes? (Ratchet and Clank Future: a Crack in Time seems to have done this, so thats ok i guess)

if anyone else has been noticing this recent trend, and don't like it either, please express your thoughts here! thanks :)

(though this thread is mainly for moaning and complaining, nevertheless flaming is as ever not allowed: though the teaser trailers are REALLY ANNOYING i'm sure the games themselves will all be great)

I don't hate them. It just reminds people that the game is coming out in about a year's time.

The only thing I didn't like was id Software showing us the Rage trailer...that was too long ago and they take forever to finish a game (not that it's a bad thing. I love id).

The modern warfare 2 one was pointless. I liked the raving rabbids ones though, if they count

Yes, the Mass Effect 2 trailer is a perfect example of this. Is Shepard dead or what!
Yeah I'm confused about it maybe it'll be like the end of the first CAD space archaeologist

I'd prefer if they made information a bit more obvious. Look at the COD4:2 trailer, I had to force my self to watch to the end.

It is called "hype" - Hollywood have done this for years. A small trailer for a sequel to some big release builds up a small bit of hype as people analyse. Its not lazy by any means - its actually harder to make a good teaser than it is to make a trailer, as the entire purpose is to be as descrete as possible and yet highly interesting and actually include some info.

Case in point. The Modern Warfare teaser was criticised by many for having no information at all. The rest of us who actually analysed it found it hinted towards some major pieces of information, not least the kind of scenarios we can expect in the game.

The teasers are not supposed to give out information on a plate. The are supposed to be discreet and complicated so the hype machine can grow with the analysing of it.

The whole point is to make people interested and that's exactly what they tend to do. More hype = more sales.

After Mirror's Edge I don't pay any heed to them.

yeah, but as a consumer i'd rather have the information nicely laid out for me - a good trailer, in my opinion, will give enough dough to satisfy the viewer and give an understanding of what the final game may look like, while still leaving enough to the imagination at the same time. teasers just leave way too much to second-guessing, and the amount of information sometimes isn't worth the bother.
