Also "respecting history" does not mean "accurately portray the factual details of individual minutae."

History, as a discipline, isn't "stuff that happened." It's more importantly a continuing set of analyses of change, of systems and cultures and movements.

My wife is a historian. She doesn't go around reciting dates and battle outcomes and names. She and her peers study and teach patterns. That's why our asshole president and his goons are out to destroy them right now.

Any moron that expects an AC game to be one hundred percent and historically accurate are only fooling and gaslighting themselves under the most double standard, arbitrary, bullshit.

What are you talking about? We all learned in school about how Paul Rider warned the patriots about the British army marching by sitting behind another dude riding the horse and yelling directions.

"TO THE LEFT, CONNOR!"

Secondly, why would they need to bullshit their way through having a gay assassin lady? Samurai historically actually had trysts with other male samurai, until the Christians showed up that is. Samurai Shamploo even had an episode on that, about a gay Dutch noble coming to Japan to find gay acceptance among the samurai. Remember how nobody had a cow over that?
About that. Have the grifters discovered Mori Ranmaru yet? Cause its pretty famous that Nobunaga had himself a boy toy.

Aparently a lot of dudes around that time period, even outside of the samurai, did. Though whether this was because they were actually gay or because of extreme misogyny (women being seen as too subhuman to do anything with but have children, like in ancient Greece) I don't know. But yeah, it'd blow a lot of people's minds how normal it was throughout history for two dudes to NOT sit 5 feet apart in the hot tub.

Assassin's Creed 2 end with the Pope flying around the Vatican shooting lasers.

Now I'm not a student of history but
Well the alternative history isn't a problem but the devs came out and bragged about how much they paid attention to and respected the history. So like if you are going to brag about being respectful to the history....then people are gonna point out the disrespect.

Once again, they've been doing this shit since the start of the series. Yet you chose to believe them, why? I am not combing to defense of Ubisoft, but you know better at this point to take what they say at face value or the "truth".

Besides, the company has much bigger issue and problems than hiding behind "being respectful to history" (which they never did to begin with). The racism, the sexism, and harassment of employees are much bigger issues and eye sores. So this company and those greedy fucks at the top can burn in hell. Cuz they ain't got shit otherwise. I play Shadows whenever my older brother decides to pick it up.

More news:

Thank you, FightinCowboy. You are well manared and I apperciate calling out the racist assholes as the ugly fuckers they truly are.

Earlier this week, a video game livestreamer and content creator was playing Assassin's Creed Shadows. And just a few minutes into his stream, some folks in chat started sharing racist comments and complaints about Shadows and one of the game's main characters, the Black samurai Yasuke. The streamer's response? A wonderful two-and-a-half-minute rant that has gone viral online as many people relate to his frustration with the ongoing culture war surrounding every new game.

If you've been on the internet in the last year or so, you've likely encountered the vocal and very angry group of gamers online who are upset that Ubisoft included a real life historical figure, Black samurai Yasuke, in its latest alt-history open-world RPG, Assassin's Creed Shadows. It's far from the first time that angry gamers have complained about people of color in a video game, and during a March 18 stream, content creator FightinCowboy became frustrated by the racists in his chat and paused the game to directly confront them.

FightinCowboy / Ubisoft
"Listen, I can already tell people in chat are getting a little feisty," said FightinCowboy. "Bro, stop. Stop. We're going to put you in timeout for like a day. There's no reason to be making comments like that."

"I'm going to make this clear. If you're just coming here to get into this weird fucking race shit about a historical figure that existed in Japanese history, I'm just gonna remove you. And guess what? That means you ain't gonna be around for Kazan, or Night Reign, or AI Limit, or any of that shit. I don't give a fuck what your opinion is of this game. I don't care. Your opinion is worthless to me. The quality of health of my morning shit had a bigger impact on my thought process today than you being upset that there's a Black guy in Assassin's Creed. So shut the fuck up. Alright?"

At this point, FightinCowboy becomes visibly and audibly frustrated as he speaks. Here's the rest of his viral rant:

We're not doing this shit. It's a fucking video game. If you are upset that there's a Black guy in a video game, fuck off. I don't want you here. I don't care. Stop. I'm not doing this fucking argument.

Every goddamn game these days. "Oh, it's woke. Oh, there's a Black guy. Oh, there's a trans person." Shut the fuck up. Either play the game or go the fuck outside, bro. It's not that hard. God damn! I've been on this earth 37 fucking years! When I was a kid, guess what? If a game came out and I didn't want to get involved with it, I didn't fucking play with it. I didn't go on the internet and cry like an entitled little child, "wah wah wah the game doesn't have stuff that I want!" So shut the fuck up and leave, bro!

Are you that much of a fucking loser that you're seeking out streams of a game you don't like just to be like, "Wahh, I don't like this! There's a Black guy!" Shut the fuck up! Nobody cares. Nobody cares! That's all. This is the only rant. I'm getting this shit out of the way now. Stop. Because any comment, any fucking comment, I'm just going to ban you. I don't care. I'm just going to fucking ban you. I don't care. I don't have time for it, bro.

I'm here to play a fucking game, not listen to you cry about a Black dude that existed in history that was brought over to Japan as a slave and then taken on by Nobunaga and made a fucking retainer, all right? If that upsets you, if that makes you not feel like you're in your special place that's not my fucking problem—go talk to your therapist about it!
There's too much drama in video games
I reached out to FightinCowboy via email and asked him about the moment and if this rant was a reaction to the reality that nearly every big game has an army of angry gamers attacking it for being woke, progressive, or diverse.

"It's definitely something that's been on my mind," FightinCowboy told Kotaku.

"I consider myself a variety creator and will typically cover 20-30 games per year, including most AAA releases and it feels like nearly every game in the last yearly cycle has some type of manufactured drama surrounding it."

The streamer, who has over 1 million followers on YouTube, tells me that most of his non-gamer or online friends have no idea about all of this "drama" but that as a video game creator, he's "subjected to it 24/7."

"Personally, I just reached my breaking point with it," he explained. "After the Stellar Blade drama last year I had mentally clocked out from most of it and I think the back to back drama with Veilguard, Avowed, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and then it culminating with Assassins' Creed Shadows was enough to where I had to get it off my chest."

Screenshot: FightinCowboy

As for whether he's surprised by the positive reaction to his rant online, he says that while he didn't expect it to go viral, he's not shocked that others feel the same way he does.

"As someone that just wants to enjoy games, the conversation constantly devolving into drama is exhausting. I'm not sure why people insist on engaging with things they're not interested in just to proliferate hate, either buy it or not and move on with your life," said FightinCowboy.

"I've never been a fan of baseball but that doesn't mean I'll suddenly go to baseball stadiums and throw insults at the attendees and audience. That's deranged behavior and I feel the same way about these people invading gaming spaces to stir up drama."

According to the creator, after his rant earlier this week chat cooled down and he mostly had no issues as everyone was on the same page. He plans to return to Shadows eventually after he wraps up some other games he's currently playing for review.

Given they gave due to even figures like Ashikaga Yoshiaki they can certainly claim to have paid attention to history and attempted to do something interesting with it. Also said statements are likely the typical pr statements during the development of any historical setting.

BTW, an update on those numbers:

Ubisoft bragged about Shadows getting 1 million players on launch day, and now this morning, they have said that the game has hit 2 million players across all platforms, which has outperformed Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey. Not Valhalla, albeit that was the record-setter for the series. And who knows, there's still time. Previously, insider reporting was that Ubisoft was shooting for at least Odyssey numbers, and it seems likely to hit that.

Of course, everyone will have an eye on concurrent Steam numbers. Shadows has 55,000 concurrent players on Steam, which is still climbing as I write this at 9:30 AM ET. It seems possible it will pass Odyssey's 62,000 from six years ago, if not today, then tomorrow perhaps. Valhalla is not a good comparison point because unlike Odyssey and Shadows, it launched on Steam a long while after its initial release, so its 15,000 peak is not relevant here. So yes, Shadows is on the verge of being the highest concurrent Steam release for the series.

As for console, we only have PS5 data, as Xbox data lags for several days. On PlayStation, Shadows is currently the #2 most-played game in the US behind only MLB The Show 25, but ahead of permanent hits like Fortnite, 2K25, FC 25 and Call of Duty.

Yes, seems like it is a good enough game and the majority of buyers are happy.

It is a bit funny how most reviewers seem to play Naoe, not Yasuke after the latter was so much of the main focus on the lead up, but i would probably do the same.

I mean, its a game setup in japan, people probably overwhelmingly want to play the Japanese protagonist. It be like if there was an AC set in Haiti during the revolution and one of the character was a chinese person, not many people that would be interested in playing in that setting would care for that out of theme character.

I think it has less to do with that and more to do with Yasuke being a tank with a sword/club, and Naoe being an actual stealthy assassin, and this being an Assassin's Creed game (from the reviewer's side anyway).

Also, Yasuke is a historical figure from Japanese history, so he's not an out-of-theme character for the setting.

Seeing more of Naoe's gameplay has me feeling like I'm more and more likely to try it out when it's on sale or on a subscription service.

At the same time, Yasuke's inclusion raises more and more questions. I think the argument that "you don't need to play as him" is pretty dumb. You didn't need to play all the stupid Batmobile races in Arkham Knight, but it was absolutely mind boggling that any dev time went to them at all. Every time you played them, you wondered what that dev time could have gone to instead. I see this as the same situation, if his gameplay is truly as bad as they say. I mean, Yasuke clearly has more literary potential than the Batmobile, but by all accounts his storyline is nothing of note.

I suppose so but AC hasn't been about sneaking for four games now. So if anything Naoe is the odd duck out for not being a tanky fighter.

Yeah, but from what I heard Yasuke can barely even climb structures, and even for as far as AC has strayed from its formula that's a new one. Not being able to climb in an AC game is like not being able to stab dudes.
