Devil May Cry 3 is Satan in game form. I never got past the second boss, and my friend never got past the third.

Never played the others though, but I think Super Mario Brothers: The Lost Levels deserves mention. While I never sat down hardcore to play it, I played with two or three continues and only ever got to the second level. It was some serious crap.
get the greatest hits version, much easier

Demon's Souls does not deserve to be on the list from what I hear.

It's hard the first time through, because it deliberately gives you a slim-to-none chance, then you can waltz through a following time, because everything is exactly the same. It's just like playing a platformer where every jump is JUST at the reach of your character, and you need to time the jumps perfectly.

Ikaruga and Battletoads have earned their places.

I'm sure I've played much harder games than MGS, but I don't play on European Extreme.
Just becuase you know a 7foot wide steam roller is moving down a 7foor 2 inches corridor towards you with no outlets doesn't mean you can survive.

The False King Allant is a jerk but a tough jerk almost regardless of how many times you fight him, though what you said is truthful of most of the rest of the game.

*snip*

Seen that before, but never been able to figure out the hitboxes of anything in it.
Incredibly tiny, like a few pixels on purpose. Your sprite is way larger than your hitbox. Most bullet hell games give you one like that. That being said, when the boss fires 8 trillion bullets and actually blocks out the screen, it's mostly just a clusterfuck of a fight. Most bullet hell games are more fair about it, the bullets will usually fire off in a pattern or design, and not a complete shitstorm.

I preferred Nightshade to Shinobi, it was slightly easier because of the improved controls.

That being said.. Megamari is a game that saw Megaman and thought.. "That's far too easy, let's add in some of the afforementioned shitstorms of bullets."

Demon's Souls isn't hard, it's just unforgiving. If you play it with online help, then it's relatively easy, although it does take a while. I've been playing it recently, and it's relatively difficult, "relatively" being the key word.

Also, I don't know what the criteria for this list, if it's just single player or what, but if you include multiplayer then upper level Starcraft MP. Jesus Tapdancing Christ, I don't think that I've seen such a crazy game.

I'm Agreeing that Demon's Souls isn't hard ^^; but on replays or New Game plus (with or without help) the threat of death never completely vanishes it wouldn't be fun or heart racingly entertaining when you miss the message saying "****** has invaded your world" (Like when I stupidly wrote a message on PSN to a friend in the middle of a world to come back about 2-3 seconds before they reached me.)then almost get stabbed in the back by an unknown assailant and manage to out manuvere her/him to survive a random encounter.

No ninety nine nights? Surprising. The last boss is literally impossible. I would post a video of it, but I cannot find anyone beating it succesfully anywhere, and if they did it would be 5 hours long... God that game was annoying...

It feels like many people here, have a 'different' understanding of what hard means. Playing against 7 heroic ai's in Heroes V, or playing a dmc game on dante must die, that's hard, because it rquires you to make the very bloody most of what you have, and requires you to play near perfect.

Having 1 life to go through all the levels, and having to restart once your dead, that's NOT hard.

Deliberately annoying, yes.
Bad game design, that we're luckily over now, yes that too.
But not hard.

Metal Gear on Extreme to get No Alerts, That IS difficult. In fact on normal, I found the game challenging, and I played it recently! And having Demons Souls there just makes me want it more! IT'S A DAMN CHALLENGE TO MY GAMING PROFILE!

Calumon: What about Mushihimesama?

It makes my eyes hurt...

I *guess* MGS was hard, if you didn't know about the whole psychomantis thing

http://kotaku.com/5540444/are-these-the-ten-hardest-games

10. Jet Set Willy (1984, Software Projects / ZXS)
9. Metal Gear Solid (1998, Konami / PS1)
8. Shinobi (2002, SEGA/PS2)
7. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening (2005, Capcom / PS2)
6. Ikaruga (2001, Treasure / Dreamcast)
5. Battletoads (1991, Rare / NES)
4. Demon's Souls (2009, From / PS3)
3. Contra (1987, Konami / NES)
2. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts (1991, Capcom / SNES)
1. Ninja Gaiden Black (2005, Team Ninja / Xbox)

Ninja Gaiden Black I have an agreement with that game it involves me never playing it again.
Of that list I have only played Metal Gear Solid, Devil May Cry 3 and Ikaruga.

I never thought Metal Gear to be that difficult, I've completed each one on the highest available setting each time (lots of infurium but doable).

Devil May Cry 3 I agree with, the easiest mode bullied a lot of people I know out of finishing the game.

Ikaruga is a *****.

I expect there must be some conditions for this list, as I know of a lot of games that are a lot more difficult than some on this list - not least games like Metal Slug.

Was Metal Gear so difficult?

Well the link is to 'kotaku.com' and has a picture of a seemingly happy asian man. Scanning over that list it seems that most of the games are Japanese. I guess I'm trying to say there may be some bias from that website, after all nobody has played every game in the world.
Surprisingly they're based in Washington, DC. Part of the Gawker network. Which makes them Deadspin for nerds. I like Deadspin. Deadspin is awesome.

That's a ridiculous list. Metal Gear Solid wasn't hard! First requirement of the game: I couldn't finish it. I know of at least ten games that I could not finish even while cheating... It seems logical to say that those would be harder, then.

Your character has a tiny wee hitbox in the middle, marked out by the flashing red/green symbol the same as the bomb counter at the bottom of the screen (Green for Reco, Red for Palm, IIRC).

The last boss is easy, if you've got the right accessory and can spam Inphyy's A A move.

If not, yeah, it's a bit harder but it's possible. I've done it.

DAmn, that's impossible! I can't work out what I'm supposed to do!

Metal Gear Solid...?

Ha. Ha ha ha. I've had more of a challenge from Soviet Strike.

Devil May Cry 3...? Possibly. But Soviet Strike was harder.
