For all the hype it's gotten, I'd say Skyrim. Portal 2 has made a VERY strong showing, though I wouldn't be surprised if it gets lost underneath all the new releases

I'm surprised Deus Ex is so highly praised here, considering how many issue the game has.

Bad boss design and a terrible ending are big things to overcome when trying to be the best game of the year.

Certainly having a lot more fun with Arkham City than with Deus Ex so far.

Dark Souls - Perfect mix of skill needed, frustration and that warm, happy feeling that ensues after you do something badass. It's also pretty, I guess. As long as the graphics don't negatively effect gameplay, they are usually at the bottom of the list of what I think a game needs...

Deus Ex: HR - I mean... Really. It's a Deus Ex game. And the title mentions neither invisibility nor wars.

Arkham City - Although I haven't played it yet, given the reviews this thing has managed thus far, it is probably a strong contender.

No Skyrim, you may wonder? First, it hasn't even come out yet and hype alone doesn't make GOTY material. Secondly, I haven't enjoyed a Bethesda title since Morrowind.

Arkham City has just been released to universal critical acclaim. Uncharted 3 and Skyrim are just around the corner and the anticipation for these games is immense. Personally, these three games are probably the top contenders for GOTY amongst the fans and the major gaming publications IMO.

Which three games do the members of the Escapist think are the ones that will be in the race for GOTY 2011?
Arkham City and Uncharted 3? Really... I mean really?

Skyrim, Portal 2, Deus Ex HR, Saints Row 3, they'll all trounce those two.
Uhm...yea pretty sure he is serious dude. Arkham City is a fantastic game. Far better than DE:HR and Portal 2 without a doubt.

But Skyrim will probably be GOTY.

Anything but Skyrim and I'll be happy. My vote goes to Arkham City, I love those guys at Rocksteady.

My personal three favorite 2011 releases are Mortal Kombat, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, and Batman: Arkham City. It is unlikely that the first two will see much love around awards season. My predictions for the "official" awards for game of the year will be that The Elder Scrolls V and Uncharted 3 will see many of the top honors, with Arkham City, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Portal 2, and the dark horse Dark Souls hot on their heels.

Personally, I'm hoping that Deus Ex Human Revolutions is up there. Best game I've played in years.

But I'm betting that Uncharted is gonna take the title yet again. :s

Terraria. Best game for the year because its not the same damn thing and actually does retro correctly instead of being just broken like many retro style indy games.

At time of writing, my personal contenders for GotY are (in no particular order) Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Batman: Arkham City. The year has been an entertaining one, but there were still very few real gems.

I was sorely disappointing by Arkham City, but for some reason the rest of gaming saw it as the second coming of Christ...

ANYWAY, there are two groups, my personal contenders for GOTY and the games that will race for GOTY in the media.

My personal GOTY choices:

Portal 2
Deus Ex: HR
Skyrim

The media choices:

Battlefield 3
Uncharted 3
Arkham City

With a slight chance of MW3

3 "GOTY Contenders" and two of them aren't even out yet.

Yeah, okay. As if there wasn't enough proof that GOTY is pure wank (a la Obama's "Nobel Peace Prize" for doing absolutely nothing, or "The Internet" being person of the year).

Yawn.
