I would destroy the wheel, come back to the present day and laugh.

It would not be a good idea to do this. You would most likely destroy the universe, because you would create a major paradox. If you destroyed the wheel, then you might have died before they got you to the hospital, if you were to be born at all. Just an example, but the small then that we would change in the past could cause major repercussions throughout time.
I think I will leave the past be past, and not change anything.

The earliest escort mission I can recall is the Peter Puppy level in Earthworm Jim. That's a darn shame since Earthworm Jim is such a good game.
