Greetings escapists. I was just wondering what is the general consensus around here on utilizing drones in combat (aerial or otherwise)? Lately there has been a big push in the United States Air Force to replace traditional aircraft with Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs). Their main argument is that removing the pilot from the aircraft nullifies the risk of losing a servicemember, having to mount a costly combat search and rescue operation, and/or spend money training a new flight officer.

This principal has also been looked into by the Navy. With Nuclear Reactors not needing to be refueled, a ship's endurance is only limited by her crew. An unmanned submarine can loiter anywhere in the world, virtually indefinitely, until it is called for. And the Army would like nothing better than to put robots into a combat zone rather than risk losing soldiers.

Of course, this has been met with opposition. Pilots argue that an AI can never replace a trained human being's instincts and judgment. Terminator fans argue that we're handing the world's largest military to sky-net. Still others argue that it will lead to countries hurling waves of expendable bots at each other over issues which war wouldn't even be considered today. So what do you guys think?

From what I understand there is no computer capable of replacing a fighter-pilot, and according to the pilots there never will be. I think at one point there will be fighter planes completely controlled by machines, but for now there is no way.

The way technology is progressing, computers will be able to outprocess our brains and abilities in the near future. I don't doubt the possibility of AI controlled fighter craft, tanks, even soldiers. Losing a service member sucks, but wouldn't it just be easier to keep the peace, how impossible that is?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't current unmanned technology just controlled far away by human being? We do not even have the technology to program jet planes to fly themselves.
Currently yes, but they're trying to get it so that UAVs can carry out their orders autonomously, with little to no input from a controller. Right now predator drones are programmed to Return to Base on their own should contact with the controller be cut, or jammed. The next step is to be able to get them to reliably be able to put a bomb on target. If I can find a reliable article about it on the internet, I'll link it.

An advantage of getting pilots out of the aircraft is you are no longer regulated to the pilots physical constraints, also yeah training cost etc. Threats to this would be if we can control X plane then there is potential for enemies to control X plane. But unmanned drones have proven quite useful in scouting/interdiction roles.

I read a short story in high school about an alternative future where A.I. had replaced human beings in all aspects of warfare. This eventually led to humanity being completely reliant on computers and the like for all their day to day decision making and critical thinking. Until one day, after years of living in the care\thrall of cybernetic handlers a man re-discovers basic mathematics. Long division, multiplication the fundamental stuff the we learn from a very early age. Of course, the people are all very excited, because now they wouldn't have to risk their precious computers in dangerous situations. Now, they can just send in expandable, and easily replaced, humans instead. The story uses exageration to try and teach a lesson: The moment technology stops being more than a tool for the betterment of our lives, and instead starts ruling it, we've lost an important aspect of ourselves.

war will become a sport rather than a conflict between countries.
Hehe, in the year 2200, War Games will be all the rage on ESPN 2. Or hell, combine it with hologram technology and a 22Pbps connection, and Battlefield 200th Anniversary edition will take place in real life on the African Savannah somewhere. Biggest MMO Ever.

How demoralizing would it be to be fighting as hard as you could possibly fight, see many of your fellows fall in battle, and know that you had not harmed a single living enemy soldier?

We want YOU
to support your benevolent robot overlords

Kind of like that one episode in Samurai Jack...
