A master in construction asks "Do you want us to build now?"
A master in architecture asks "Do you want us to build it like this?"
A master in arts asks "Do you want fries with that?"
Heard a similar one from a friend.
An Engineer asks "How does it work?"
A Scientist asks "Why does it work?"
An Artists asks "Would you like fries with that?"
But onward. I wouldn't even humor myself with an art program. I have the creativity of a platypus and about half the talent. I'm a math geek to the core.
Art has two categories
REAL ART: art that is fun to look at has no purpose other then to look pretty.
MODERN ART: totally useless pointless boring pieces of crap that can literally be pieces garbage, that it totally over priced and is only bought by rich people that have far too much money.
Wait-
Why the Hell do you think that art is all about looking pretty?
The above work that you liken to feces has already served its purpose-
proving that you'd consider a blank canvas art just because it is a canvas mounted in a museum.
I mean, seriously, you're a pawn of the artist.
You people keep complaining about something that you don't even make an effort to understand. You're being just as bad as the people who blame art for criminal acts.
So... Art has to cater to your needs?
I'm sorry, but some people have different tastes. Just because you don't get into it means that it is useless.
Really, though. Look who'se talking. A bunch of gamers.
Video games have done far less for society than art has, and yet "art" it being called the useless one. Games are built on hedonism, one mother of all uselessness.
Is it more useless than religion class? Yes, my university makes us take a religion class, how exactly is that gonna help me in my work? Its like algebra, im never gonna use this in real life!
Some people may, but it's negative to make that generalization to everyone. People might just want to learn new techniques, refine their skills with a teacher and a class room, slaving hours to get the little parts of their assignments right. There are plenty of people getting that degree to have an easy degree, but curse all and the expense of a group, regardless of size. Because there will always be the one person who takes it seriously, at least one.
That is why I say most. That one guy/girl out of the 50 who is willing to put in the time and effort is the one I want to work with, but he/she is going to have a long hard grind pulling ahead of the pack. In that long hard grind will come the real training. How many famous artist get famous right out of school?

Did you even try to consider the higher meaning of that PHOTO, not a painting. A blank slate, an empty life, life is meaningless, a criticism of society in itself. If you don't even want to try to attempt to understand something fully that your going to talk about, don't talk about, go to your next thread
How about 'stop making an excuse for a bunch of idiots looking at a blank canvas and drawing meaning from it'. Look up at the night sky. Look at the vastness of everything. And then remember, +99.99% of everything is void space - even you, and me.
See, I do have a handle on such things. But, and he's the key part, art is something that invokes an emotional reaction, thought, or other idea through a medium. Does this mean a blank canvas is art? Possibly, possibly. Does it mean its worth oodles and oodles of cash, and to be shown as a 'national treasure'? Fuck no.
The 'art elite' are so far up there own arses there going to suffocate. Artist are meant to try and make us think. These pretenous arseholes seem to think they can do the job with a blank canvas, a room where the bulb goes on and off, and a bed with the names of all the guys the artist sleep with on them.
And you know what? Outside of their little world of selling garabage as art, we see scenes like this:
Glasgow art fair:
Melbourne street:
See, this is more likely art to engage with people. Thats what art has to do to work. Just showing people an ordinary or pretenous thing, calling it art, and asking for shit loads of money isn't art.
Anyone interest, I can recommend "Not Quite Art", a short series I found a few months ago by accident (yeah, Yahtzee is in an episode and hence how I first found it).

What about this piece of shit modern art? Yes that is modern art.
But yeah REAL artists should be allowed to perfect their craft but people that consider the above piece (or other modern arts) an art shouldn't be in college wasting resources.

But video games ARE art. They combine drawings, animations, writing and the fact that you can interact with them creating one of the most unique and beautiful art forms WITH a purpose in a long time.
The process of preparing programs for a digital computer is especially attractive, not only because it can be economically and scientifically rewarding, but also because it can be an aesthetic experience much like composing poetry or music.
Can I just say there are no redundant courses out there imo. The idea of going on to univeristy is to SPECIALISE in a subject YOU ARE interested in. Those that go for a degree just because it opens up better prospects rather than a subject which interests them are going to have one tough ride.
I personally love creating Digital Art and photography. I dont do it for Fame or Wealth, its osmething I simply enjoy. But when I show it (on DeviantART) not for attention but mearly show my friends what i'm able to do (because Im sure as hell no god) I commonly get bombarded with some random people who think "Your a nobody. your not funded like myself. drop the Camera and GTFO"
Or simply, "I hate competition, stop making it harder for my more rich, well funded life you 1900 Film Camera User"
I hate telling people what I'm studying because when I say "computer games technology", they always go "Oh, so you play games and stuff?"
Yes, I pay a shitload of student tuition fees, train fares and living expenses so I can wake up at 6am in the morning to play games all day.
Someone once told me he was studying Computer Science and laughed at me for studying CGT becuase "A hard-nosed" science would beat out my "artsy" degree and he'd be getting job offers by the buckeload and I'd be the one with the mcjob.
What he didn't know was that my course teaches an enormous amount of 3D realtime maths and physics and an intense amount of programming in industry-relevant libraries like OpenGL and shader language (Cg).
3 years later, I'm almost finsihed my honours, got a job offer from a company in Dundee and have experience with Cg and OpenGL and all he has done is some shit with Visual Basic and Pascal.
"What do you do, with a B.A. in English? Four years of college, and plenty of knowledge, have earned me this useless degree!" - Avenue Q.
Personally, I'm still in high school. And I'm aiming to do a dual Fine Arts/Law degree, which requires a 99.5+ UAI. I'm considering then going into copyright law focusing on the defense of artist's work, because it's severely underrepresented.
Meh Im an art appreciator myself merely as a hobby would love to do it as a course someday but I hounestly think all students need a dose of reality. If you think your going out of college/uni fresh faced into a well paying job heh good luck, experiance is always a higher priority for employers. Been working since i was 17 aswell as juggeling three years worth of college, may go back and put in the work for a master degree someday but financial security/a paid off home are much more important to me, rather live stable and happily in a meh job than go back to eating beans and toast in a shared flat as a student.

After being fighting the side for "Video games as art" for about 4 years now how could anyone, on a video game based forum no less, argue that art is useless.
Scott McCloud (1993) said:
ART, as i see it, is any human activity which DOESN'T grow out of EITHER of our species two basic instincts:SURVIVAL and REPRODUCTION.
as shown above this snippet from Scott McCloud's book "understanding comics: the invisible art" shows how a definition of art is difficult to reach, hell, he spends a good portion of the early book trying to answer that very question. but almost all things are art. from the way a symphony plays a classical tune to when you're bored and tap your fingers on the desk. The greatest painting by a renowned master of the arts to the picture of sponge bob my 6 year old sister drew me at the weekend.
To tell people to stop wasting time on art is to say, lets stop all technological, medical and scientific progress and go out and to f*ck and eat instead.
art is what made humanity the great civilization it is, without it we'd still be naked, hunting animals with out bare hands (weapon crafting and simple clothing design could be considered art)
I know a lot of people will look past yet ANOTHER wall of text in this page, but to say art is a waste of time, ironically, is a waste of time. We NEED art as a society to keep from being the monosyllabic naked cave dwellers that we once were. (as the spoken language could eb considered art)

Funny, I like both of those. That is, both are images I would gladly hang on my wall. I don't get why there always has to be an 'either this or this', why can't we have both? Sometimes one can have the cake and eat it too.

Excuse me, but don't misread my comment. I was saying AT LEAST that art was engaging through colour/pattern/etc, i.e. the stuff that interests human brains and takes more effort to achieve that getting a canvas or 3 and hanging them on a wall. Art elitist bullshit be damned, blank canvas', a room with a bulb that flashs on...off...on...off, and a bed with the artists 'little black book' written all over it are not art.
Put some blood effort into making it engaging 'artists'.
I really can't bash the arts seeing as I used to be a Cinema major. I think one of the problems is, people will start in something but never finish it/lose interest.
Stop calling me a fool and at least pick up a damn book.
I keep trying to explain to yall that art doesn't have to be about beauty, but have meaning.
The fact that you keep obseessing over art saying, "This isn't art," proves that the artist achieved their goal; you're thinking exactly what they wanted you to think.
