I recently watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and let me tell you this: anyone who argues that Rey is a Mary-Sue can fuck right off.
Being aware of those arguments before watching the film, I was waiting for her unbelievable competency to appear, and then it never did. I really did enjoy the film, though. I guess I'm just more than a little irritated that there's dude's getting their panties in a bunch because a female character is deemed too capable by doing... pretty much what a male protagonist would do in a movie.
She is extremely capable (some might say even too capable), but I think the difference between her and an actual Mary Sue is that you can sense that she's putting in the effort. Even when she fights and practically bests Kylo Ren there's a struggle to it. And there's plenty of moments where's scared and shows some weakness.

Jake Sully in Avatar... Now that was a Mary Sue.

OT: Bugs that fly in my face while I'm riding my bike. It's spring and thanks to all the plants springing back to life so too are all the tiny little insects. Can wait for August and have spiderwebs all up in my face when walking the dog.

Add a third to that.
Not to mention Kylo Ren was injured; I wont go into the whole "He was using massive amounts of Force energy to keep his guts from falling out" spiel, it was a grazing shot, he wasn't injured that badly, but he was still injured and was just fighting Finn although to be fair, it was kind of a wash) and he's not fully trained.
Rey winning that battle was a combination of Kylo not being at full strength and her being a competent fighter already, not magic writer win juice.

Anyway.

Long as we're talkin' 'bout Episode VIII, call me a fanboy, maybe I'm not seein' somethin', but I didn't think it was that much of a remake of Episode IV. It's got a few similarities... alright, A LOT of similarities but I think it's got a few original legs to stand on.

I'm just frustrated with my own situation in life. My job. My personal projects, My writing and my Podcast (Pssssttt! Check the link under my name!!!!)

I'm very deeply unhappy. I'm lonely. my dating profile has yielded no responses. You could argue that's because I'm not sending any out, but because I don't want to be called a creep I'm waiting for a lovely lady to make the first move. But thats not happening. and I'm exhausted sleeping about 3 hours tonight because I'm working on these personal projects I hope will earn me money at some point.

Yet today, my own sister called me a bum. I hold down a 40 hour a week job, how am I a bum? Fuck it.

The entire "feminists don't hate men" debacle. Look, I'm a feminist. I voted for the Swedish feminist party in our latest election, and I read feminist books. But I get annoyed when somebody says "People need to stop thinking feminism is about hating men!!!" Mate, nobody says or thinks that. They just claim that in practice, feminists hate men. And while that's not true, it's definitely true that some feminists hold a clear aversion to men in general.

And honestly, I feel that some feminists just don't think about how they come of. If you only talk about men to complain about all the horrible things men do, or to support men who want to do traditionally feminine things[footnote]Let me stress that I fully agree some dudes do horrible things to women, and it's absolutely fine for men to do traditionally feminine things.[/footnote] then obviously you'll seem like you feel all men are horrible except for the ones who want to be like women.
Swedish Feminist Party should be the name of a rock band.

Eh, I struggled to find any bit in the film which wouldn't be perfectly normal if she were a dude protagonist and I didn't see it. I don't see her as very or 'too' capable at all. Like you said, she manages things but you can clearly see she's trying, it's not effortless for her, and a lot of the things she's good at make sense because of her background. I just feel she was put under a unnecessary level of scrutiny.

Back to OT: People who share gross pictures on Facebook. What the fuck is wrong with you? I do not want to see pictures of some guy with massive injuries or animals being abused. It's not gonna make me share it, it's gonna make me want to puke and then unfollow you. Why are you the way you are.

To be fair, Luke started out being far newbier, even getting his butt zapped by that training ball. Sure I bet Rey being a woman got her more criticized than she would if she was a man, but I also bet if she was put against that training ball, she would have destroyed it. Luke atleast waited for the actual Deathstar space fight to go OP, meanwhile Rey is literally doing backflips in the Millennium Falcon. I don't think its Rey's fault though as much as its the movie's attempts to be far more actiony than the original trilogy.

This student loan crisis and rising tuition cost to attend a college is getting way out of hand. Here from Elementary school onwards, kids are continuing to be fed this outdated false doctrine if they don't attend a college, their life is gonna suck. And they're gonna be stuck flipping burgers. Meanwhile, despite having a higher amount of college graduates than in the past. America has a huge skills gap between what colleges teaches, and the work that needs to be done in this country. Specifically the trades (plumbing, carpenters, elevator mechanics, etc), and even a fairly large shortage of truck drivers. Which only requires a CDL, and the basic CDL isn't that hard to get. And those burger flippers at fast food joints, include college graduates with no jobs skills to speak of. Because they were led to believe a degree will open any door. And find themselves humbled when the real world hits them that they have a hard time getting a minimum wage job.

The US government is creating unsustainable jobs in the college world. Jobs that will disappear overnight when the kids of college graduates who are in a near lifetime of being stuck in massive debts; discourage their kids from attending college. Or at least to avoid the more expensive options. If the college bubble doesn't burst before then. As a college graduate myself who is blessed that TAF and Pell grants paid for my affordable 4 year college at a good school. I personally encourage those interested in college to consider cheaper options or even not attending at all. You have kids taking out loans they don't understand what interest rates mean. And at one point either I didn't know either. So no you don't owe $35,000 or $100,000. The money you actually owe with interest, is actually closer to $65,000 or $200,000.

Which also means the housing market may collapse again in the future. When millions of college graduates are too deep in debt to afford a house. Or have already defaulted and unfortunately destroyed their credit in the process.

I don't mean to gloat, but this is exactly why I'm grateful to have found a comfortable field of employment in land surveying. Well, that and living in a country where education is free for everyone (or as 'muricans call it, "filthy commie beta cuck socialist land"). It's an always timely, always developing field with a host of versatile career opportunities, steady employment and good pay. Any time I hear stories like yours from the US of A, I count my blessings and remember that my country was chosen as the best in the world.

Four more years of tory rule as they constantly try to dismantle and privatise the public's NHS. Cutting to all public services due the farce of austerity while the richest do not pay their fair share of tax. The tory election spening scandal being mostly ignored by the BBC in favour of attacking the only party we have that speaks for the working class. The selling of arms to Saudi and Israel as they attack citizens and hospitals. The constant bullshit to do with the EU as more bills are being snuck past, including one to limit the power of the unelected lords of common who can vote down the worst of bills. The endless lies and spin. The huge right wing control of most of our media. The rising homelessness, child poverty and food banks. The subsidies given to large oil corporationa as our renewable energy budget is cut. The selling off of social housing and education. The attempts at weakening the Freedom of Information act. The complete fucking apathy of most the population as they are being robbed while they are told it is for their own good. The overworked nurses and shortage of staff, including in mental health areas which many including myself rely upon. It is so much legal corruption, how is it legal to lie outright to the public?? Fucking hell!
And then to come online and see grown adults arguing about a game score difference of one cunting point?!? Arggghhh!!

The true American way. Bullshit, lies, false hope and betrayal of its people.

Are more and more Americans realising this or the indoctrination getting stronger?

When those in power have agendas, it hurts millions.

Ahh the true British... ahh fuck it. Just echo what I said it previous post. The Tories have an agenda to cater to those with money and power. They just don't give a fuck that millions will be effected in the long run as they think about short term goals.

How do people still pay so much attention to game reviews in this day and age?

None of the major gaming websites even seem to care about gameplay anymore. The Uncharted series for example, has barely functional gameplay. Completely unsatisfying gun controls, barely any enemy variety, painfully-linear platforming that has pretty much no risk involved, etc. etc.

But no, it has decently written characters and has a semi-interesting setting (considering video games' low, low standards), and that's apparently plenty enough to be a 5 star game nowadays.

Heck, even when they like the gameplay, they never go into any details. The new Doom? Handles and moves so buttery smooth and the gunplay is satisfying as all hell. But of course, they spend 90% of their time talking about the setting, how heavy-metal it all is, etc. "Oh, and on a side note - the gameplay feels good too."

Why are these people reviewing games at this point? Please review movies instead. The interactive portion of the game is something they clearly don't care about.
