They killed Illidin? WTF. This is why I'm pissed off at World of Warcraft. I don't play it, and by the time Warcraft 4 comes out I'm going to be massively behind in the story. If they kill off Arthas I'm going to throw a hissy fit.
Happened towards the end of Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. Illidains death is pre-wow lore.
No, he survived the duel with Arthas. One of my friends told me that he was going to be a boss in one of the expansions, and I assumed that he ran away when through a hidden door when you beat him him or something.
Blizzard said early on that the reason you had the terrible ingame cinematic with the Arthas Illidan fight in TFT is because they ran out of time, originally it had been a cinematic with the same graphics and gusto of the others in the game, and at the end it would have shown Illidan watching as Arthas ascended to his throne. In the Burning Crusade, Players made their way through "tiers" of content (called such because each raid set had a different tier loot associated with it) Tier Four was introductory, it was the Raid dungeon Karazhan, where Medivh used to hang his hat. Not much lore was given about this and thus the fanbase was confused about why we went in and tried to kill everything within. Tier Five was defeating Illidans old Lieutenants, Vasj and Kael'Thas. Origionally this was part of the attunement for Tier 6 content as both Vasj and Kael had a vial of the original well of eternity given to them by Illidan. Kael'thas had cut ties with Illidan, who after his failure at Icecrown, he went insane and did everything he could to protect himself from Kil'Jaedens wrath. Kael'thas went to work for the Burning Legion directly, his attacks on Tempest Keep netted him a Narru that he sent back to Azeroth so that the Blood Elves could become paladins (they literally forced the Narru to work for them). However just prior to the reopening of the Dark Portal by Kazzak, Valen and his Dranei were able to capture one of Tempest Keep's satellite facilities, the Exodar, and use it to flee Outland. As far as we know Vashj still works for Illidan, and is draining Zangermarsh of Water. Why I'm not really sure but she is, however if Lady Azhara summons Vashj will come running. Kael'thas was defeated and wounded terribly in Tempest Keep by the players, Vashj seems to have been killed in Serpent Shrine Cavern.
Tier Six content consisted of three seperate raids, Caverns of Time: Mount Hyjal, Black Temple and Sunwell Plateau. Hyjal and BT were both put in fairly early on, Hyjal was the players going back in time to prevent the infinite dragonflight from redirecting the course of history by having archimonde kill the world tree without dying himself. It's an interesting instance from a lore perspective, as you get to fight side by side with Jaina, Thrall, and Tyrande in the WoW version of the final Warcraft 3 level.
Black Temple was Illidans fortress, With help from Akama and Miev Shadowsong, the players fight their way up from the sewers to the very pinnacle of the fortress. Killing Tereon Gorefiend and a bunch of other servents of Illidan. The last Boss is Illidan himself, the fight starts with Akama confronting Illidan, and after the first phase of the fight Akama departs, The players beat Illidan down to a certain percentage of his life, and Miev shows up and helps you finish him off. Then she realizes she no longer has a purpose in life, and nothing more is shown of her.
Sunwell Plateau, and it's 5 man partner Magisters Terrace, were added in the last 4 months of Burning Crusade. Magisters Terrace was about going in and stopping Kael'thas (who players thought they had killed in Tempest Keep) from helping is master get back to Azeroth using the spirit of the Sunwell. Sunwell Plateau was a VERY difficult dungeon that had you fighting everything from a Pit Lord, to Kael'thas's kidnapped Narru, to Kil'Jaeden himself (Kil'Jaeden didn't get killed, the explanation for how we fought him was that he wasn't fully in the material plane. Players simply held him off long enough that the spirit of the Sunwell was able to force him back into the Twisting Nether)
Long story short, you killed Illidan and most of the major players in Warcraft 3 TFT. And it looks like Wrath is having us finish off most of the other major characters (although they do have a penchant to be like comic books and bring everyone back... Dreadlords have a nasty habit or returning.)
I'm saying as a last resort Arthas made a super powerfull being and sent him back in time to conqure the world A.K.A The Lich King into a paradox...The Lich king created Archimonde and Medivh is The Archmionde after he kills off everything so he goes back in time to save the world Thus completing it.
... The Burning Legion was created by Sargeras, who has been in a fight with the denizens of Azeroth Twice, once during the war of the ancients, and the second time he was killed by Agwen. He was able to secret his soul into Agwens womb, When Agwen eventually gave birth to Medivh, part of Sargeras was in Medivh. That part didn't show until Medivh came to majority and got most of his powers. Sargeras used medivh to bring the Orcs to Azeroth and precipitate the three major wars. Archimonde and Kil'Jaeden are the two Lieutenants, second only in power to Sargares himself within the burning legion. Kil'Jaeden created the Lich King by twisting and imprisoning the soul of Ner'Zhul (an orc Shaman from Beyond the Dark Portal) within a block of ice and some armor. Ner'Zhul forced Frostmourne from the ice and set it up to find a hero that it would seduce to the "dark side". The reason that Arthas keeps loosing power in TFT is becasue the hole that frostmourne left in the ice was slowly letting power out of the throne. At the end of TFT Arthas and Ner'Zhul combine to become one of the most powerful beings on Azeroth.
Arthas doesn't however have the power to manipulate time.
