Since my laptop is a piece of shite, the only chance I have of playing the Witcher 2 on any playable setting is on my Xbox, as it's coming out for consoles in April. So the question I am posing is, among the excellent releases in 2012, is the Witcher 2 still worth getting? Or should I get Kingdoms of Amalur or something?

The controls actually worked better on the 360 controller when it first launched for PC. I'd say hold off until the Enhanced Edition arrives, then get it.

Kingdoms of Amalur is fun, but it's nothing special. Everything about it is pretty average. I found it very fun at first, but after 12 hours of playing I'm starting to get bored. It's getting too repetitive. If only the story was more interesting, but it isn't. The Witcher 2 will last you longer and it will fulfill your RPG craving and then some.

I'll admit one of the reasons I liked the Witcher 2 was that it was gorgeous on my PC. Luckily for you it is also a deep and thoughtful game with more interesting characters and situations than most current games not made by Obsidian.

I liked Amalur's combat more than Witcher's but that's about it. It doesn't look as good and the story and characters are totally forgettable.

But in the end it depends on what kind of RPG experience you're looking for. Witcher 2 offers more in the story department while Amalur is more of an exploration game - a little bit like Elder Scrolls stuff but with a good combat system and a clunkier inventory management.

One thing that was good about Kingdom of Amalur was the combat, but the story sucked. I'm hoping for The Witcher 2 on xbox, and hopefully it wpon't be too dumbed down for us console players . . .
