The Witcher Enhanced Edition Announced

The Witcher [http://www.cdprojekt.com/], currently scheduled to hit store shelves in May.

The Witcher Enhanced Edition will feature significant upgrades over the original release of the game that will address both technical concerns as well as common complaints among gamers about gameplay issues. Loading times will be reduced by 80 percent, according to Project Manager Maciej Szcześnik, along with improved game stability and "an array of smaller fixes" that will lead to heightened combat interactivity. Of greater interest, however, are the changes to the game itself, which promise to significantly improve the immersion and experience.

"First and foremost, the English-language version will be completely redone. The amount of text in that version was reduced compared to other language versions and that was said to cause a significant decrease in immersion and atmosphere. Now the English version will be as polished and atmospheric as the other language versions," Szcześnik said.

"Over 50 new supporting character models will be added, so that the player won't run into the same person too often," he continued. "The inventory panel will be redesigned and improved, and some elements of the main game screen will be polished. However, one of the biggest changes that will greatly increase the player's immersion in the game world will be improvements concerning dialog scenes. Both Geralt [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geralt]and non-player characters will get over 100 new animated gestures which will make their body language during conversations much more natural. Additionally, the facial animation and lip-sync system will be re-created, making the faces of the speakers now even more natural, as well."

Many more smaller changes will also be implemented, and the German edition of the game will see a complete re-recording of many character voices. The Witcher Enhanced Edition will also include the D'jinii mod editor, two additional adventures for Geralt to embark upon, two separate CDs featuring music from and inspired by the game, an official guide written by the development team, a new short story by Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrzej_Sapkowski]and a map of the game world.

"The leading idea during the development of The Witcher Enhanced Edition is to create a game that is devoid of all of the major criticisms levied at the original release," said CD Projekt CEO Michał Kiciński. "The Witcher was received very warmly by both players and the media, but we are well aware that it is not a product without its faults. There was just not enough time to perfect certain elements, while we learned that some things needed to be changed from the players themselves. Now we have the opportunity to introduce changes that will allow The Witcher to provide even more enjoyment. I hope that, as a result, the game will come even closer to the ideal RPG."

Adam Kiciński, head of CD Projekt RED, said RPG fans who have already purchased The Witcher "need not worry": The developer will be offering all the new content and upgrades as a free download for current owners. The Witcher Enhanced Edition is set for release in Eastern Europe on May 16, and Kiciński said he is "confident" the game will also be available internationally on the same date. So is this yet another example of people who bought the origional finding theyll need to cough up another £30 (or more since when games get packaged as "special"/dirctors cut etc that seems to give them free reign to add another £10 to the pice) for what in essence is what the origional should have been?

Or will they be kind enough to release the upgrades as a patch for those who already coughed up for the game? Not that I have it but if i did id be pissed if had to buy it again to get the extras.

Try reading the whole thing.

Nobody is going to have to pay anything. People who haven't bought The Witcher will have added incentive to do so; people who have bought it get a whole bunch of really cool free stuff to go along with it.

I think this is an absolutely fantastic thing, and it's also virtually unprecedented. Fixing bugs is one thing (and, for the record, the game is running fine on my mid-range system, been very stable and performs quite adequately) but upgrading the game to this extent goes well above and beyond the call. Your criticism really doesn't make much sense in light of how good the game was to begin with.

A patch fixes errors. This fixes errors, tweaks gameplay based on gamer feedback, adds two (and possibly three) new adventures, completely revamps the English dialog, adds a mod editor, two soundtrack CDs, a developer guide, a short story by the original Witcher author, new gestures, facial animations, improved lip sync, 50 new character models... and you call it a patch?

I'm starting to wonder if we're even talking about the same thing here.

Great News. Perhaps the Escapist might review it properly this time when it is released. The last attempt was laughable (if your going to bandy the word 'misogyny' around, at least know what it means), and the post review banfest a major dent in the sites credibility.

The improved version is free for anyone who already has the game :) I was gonna buy it since it was somewhat of a fuss about the game but now i think i'll wait for the improved version.

Makes one very happy that one bought the game a month ago ...
Doubt that they can create a good game despite the new content, though, but at least it will be much less aggrevating, it seems.

If this happened to KOTOR II... there would be much rejoicing.
It's about to: http://www.team-gizka.org/
In any case, this is a very decent move by the developers. Even if most of the content should have been included in the original, that's more than most developers do (ah, PoP2) and providing it for free to those who have already payed for it (as opposed to the myriad "GotY" versions) is a show of good faith. It's obviously an attempt to boost sales, but only by increasing the value of the product.

Hmm. Given some of your previous posts, I'm not entirely sure you're joking here.

Complaining about this would be like complaining about free candy.

I really enjoyed The Witcher. Once this upgrade comes out, I might enjoy a second play-thru.

I don't know why people call this a glitch-filled game. I play it on a HP DV9000 (custom) Laptop, AMD Turion 2x1.8ghz, 250 SATA HDD, GeForce Go7600 256 with 4gig 5-5-5-15 RAM at 1280x800 with settings on high and it plays as well as Oblivion or Hellgate. The loading time issue was just a patch that came out just weeks after the game hit shelves (and I tell you, the loading times for Bioshock on my system are even worse, just not as frequent.)

I am really looking forward to this update, my only issue is that as a previous owner I don't get the printed game guide and maps! All registered users of the original versions should be able to receive those, it's just the fair way of doing it.

For myself, I had a case where I had a quest to clear a cave of baddies, but one of them spawned at a spot that was inaccessible. Since the unit location was persisted, exiting and coming back wouldn't fix it. I had to load all the way back before I started the game in order to get it to respawn in a place where I could kill it.

In another case, I had to go around the city killing people harassing the prostitutes. They never showed up after two nights. I even looked up a walk-through to make sure I was doing it right. Once again, I had to load to a point before I received the quest, and after reacquiring it, it worked fine the first try.

Even though it was two quests in quite a few hours of gameplay, in both cases it was at least half an hour of dicking around trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, when it was the game's fault.

I don't know how common these problems were for anyone else, or if things like this continued to happen, as I stopped playing not long after getting into the city, but there definitely were bugs.

I agree. I never noticed the load times being too bad, though I think I started with the patch. Or maybe we're just patient. I remember still remember the load times in Diablo, after all :)
