I played it awhile back, maybe made it about halfway through (or maybe not I'm not sure how long the game is). I like the game a good deal, and I plan to come back to it someday, it's just that my gaming time is limited these days, and most of the time I do have I end up playing multiplayer games with my buds.
I like the way they treated alchemy in this game, playing on hard doesn't necessarily make the game really that much harder, but simply adds more depth to the game in the form of alchemy. I think lots of games could benefit through systems like this, however I did find myself at times having to grind herbs and kicking myself in the pants thinking of how much time I could have saved if i didn't have to rely on potions so much.
I like how they did the open-ended quest decisions, however having played several of the scenarios I've come to find that there almost always is a "correct" answer, because the reward for one decision usually greatly outweigh those of the other outcome. Because of this, I've found myself saving before important decisions and playing them over again choosing both choice to make sure I made the right decision, and I find that a bit tedius. I guess I could play the whole game through one way and then play it again the other, but my insecurities on how I might be playing the game poorly keep me from doing that.
I'm also not a fan of the boss fights. I can't even remember how many times I died fighting the "Beast" boss fight. I used every potion and oil in my arsenal and still died a million times due to some mishap with my healer getting killed.
If you have played through the game, I just got to the part where I have to choose between leading the elven rebels into battle, or helping the crusaders from the town. I'm not sure which side to choose, as I like them both. Anyone have any suggestions on which produces the better outcome?
Also, relevant to the original post. Yes, the enhanced edition is vastly improved from the original, which is saying alot as I liked the original a good deal. But the combat seems a bit smoother, the dialogue is better, the menus (especially the inventory) has been greatly improved, and yes the load times as well have been reduced. All and all, it allows the witcher to reach its full potential as a great game imo.
