The Rumour started by Gamexplain over the weekend was real

last night Platinum Games has officially launched a kickstarter for The Wonderful 101, a previous Wii U exclusive to be remastered.

the initial goal was about $74,264 (Australian dollars. not sure how much that is murican money soz)
that goal was fully reached withing 20 minutes and now less than 24 hours later all of the Kickstarter tiers have been reached and the game is now sitting at a total of $1,573,000.00 (Australian) dollars pledged and counting

https://www.kickstarter.com/project...mepage-projectcollection-1-staff-picks-newest

the most surprising news from all of this is that The Wonderful 101 IP is co-owned by Platinum Games and Nintendo, and Nintendo has allowed Platinum to release the Remastered version on other platforms

The Wonderful 101 is now officially coming to the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Steam because it reach all of its kickstarter stretch goals

the game is set to release in April.

thoughts?

My favorite part is what you get if you pledge a paltry 110,000 yen, about 1000 USD, or more.
Not everyone has had the privilege of being blocked on Twitter by the illustrious Hideki Kamiya, but that?s all about to change. At a very special Kickstarter tier, Kamiya himself will tweet directed to you, and then will block you forever!
As for thoughts, one more down. Now just Mario 3D World and the Wii U can fade from memory as far as I'm concerned.

yeah that whole twitter blocking thing is hilarious.

i backed the 55,000 yen Wonderful Toys tier so i'm super excited to be getting all the perks from that. especially the Wonder Pendant!

Mario 3D was a good game and should get a rerelease at some point i reckon. probs not right now but eventually. now that The Wonderful 101 is being ported the only real Wii U Port i really want remaining is Pikmin 3 on the Switch.

Right, that was on Wii U. For some reason I remember that being on Wii. Or maybe 3DS? Probably just a figment of my imagination, or maybe they were right when they said calling it Wii U was dumb, or maybe I'm just dumb (which is ludicrous, of course. Look at my avatar. Professerly AF).

Anyway, Pikmin 3 can come. 3D World first tho. No wait, Metroid Prime first, then ports. I have spoken.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Looks good to me, that game is one of the reasons I'm unwilling to get rid of my Wii U, having it on pc would be awesome. Although I do have to wonder how they will manage some of the gameplay since the wiipad thing was pretty integrated with the gameplay, for better or worse.

omfg not only can you pay to get blocked on Twitter by Kamiya, if the Wonderful 101 backers can UNITE UP! and complete all of the social media missions. Mission 12 is Kamiya will clear his ENTIRE block list on Twitter! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Well that's certainly neat. Although I am curious, for those who have played it, just how 'essential' are the motion control aspects? How well would it play with a more traditional controller?

The original game was still mostly edit: totally playable without using the touchscreen or motion controls; you can use the right stick to draw lines and transform your Wonder crew, IIRC. If you could handle Okami with just a traditional controller, you shouldn't have any issues. Even if not, it doesn't take long to get used to.

One thing I'm wondering about tho. They 're already releasing in April and the amount of money they want also seems low for 3 ports in total. So either they can port dirt cheap and super fast, or ...

... all the ports are basically already done and this is a roundabout way of doing pre-orders.

Nintendo Co Owns The Wonderful 101 IP with Platinum Games.

Based off interviews with Platinum, like 2nd link i posted in the OP, it seems that platinum wanted to bring the game to multiple platforms to help it reach a wider audience.

When they asked Nintendo permission do this the Big N's response was
"We're happy to fund the remaster but if we do you are not allowed to publish on other platforms. If you want the game on other platforms, then you do it entirely yourselves including getting funding to publish the remaster"

It was basically be either funded fully by Nintendo and be forced to stay exclusive, or platinum will have no funding at all and have to handle the remaster distribution entirely themselves. And that's what basically gave Platinum the kickstarter idea.

What's still unclear is whether Nintendo will still receive a portion of profits from the other platforms given that Nintendo still co-owns and still has legal rights the W101 trademark

Platinum will also likely use the kickstarter funds to help them become a full self publisher themselves for new games in the works

Oh yes, I had a feeling something like that was going on. Platinum very likely already has most all the necessary kits and tools voor PS4/PC development from previous experience, and I guess ?500,000 should be enough to support a small team's wages for one year, so that seems a plausible amount. Releasing all ports by april seems like they'd have to haul ass tho, so I'm guessing two possible situations.

1. Nintendo funded the Switch port and it's far enough along for april release. The extra Kickstarter funds are needed to start development of the other two ports, which will then be released at a later date.
2. All three ports are actually far enough along for that april release. Nintendo funded the Switch ports while Platinum funded the other two out of their own pocket. Kickstarter is a means to already recoup some of their costs.
