Every day. I hear this word Every. Single. Day. Chances are, a fair amount of you use it yourselves on a regular basis. And for whatever reason, its "modern day use" that I'm sure you are all aware of, is starting to get on my nerves. It seems wherever you go people are ready to jump on the FAIL!! bandwagon whenever someone makes a mistake. And I mean ANY mistake.
Kid misses a catch while playing ball? FAIL!
Someone mispronounces a word? FAIL!
Even if someone's OPINION doesn't seem to match that of the majority, you guessed it, it's a FAIL. What the hell? Am I the only one that's getting sick of such spontaneous mean-spiritedness being directed at things that aren't even worth pointing out these days? Funny thing is, 98% of the time I read/hear the word FAIL, it's not even directed towards me, yet it annoys me all the same.
And God forbid anyone should ever have to fall under the oppressing EPIC FAIL (OMG did he sai EPIC fail?? Dats like eleventy times as much FAIL!) Seriously, what happened to courtesy? As an assistant coach for my siblings' elementary track team, I hear kids shout this kinda thing at each other all the time, even to other kids that they obviously don't know well. (A word of advice, don't drop the baton.)
So what are your opinions on the phrase?

(P.S. If you don't feel the same way I do on the subject, then you're just a FAIL!)

Ok I understand the joke you were trying to make but if that word being used in such a way annoys you so much why did you use it just then?

OT: I hate those phrases being used in those ways as well. However, occasionally, or may I say rarely, I use them in those ways too. I don't worry about it much though, soon it will die out. These are just slang phrases and no matter how hard you try and how much you educate kids about grammar and spelling slang will exist.

Well, to be fair, it is a failure to miss a catch or to mispronounce a word. Thus, you are failing. However, I'm a traditionalist. Rather than merely saying "Fail," I will instead say "Dude, you fucking suck. Why don't you go inside and do something you're good at, like losing at a game or reading a picture book. You're such a disappointment." But that's just me.

I use it myself but only when I see something really stupid happen. Like "Hey, this giant mud hill with rocks at the bottom looks fun. Lets slide down on boogie boards!"

I may also say it when a roommate says or does something stupid. For example we were talking about a character who had died in a game and he was joking that the antagonist was using her to still antagonize the main character about his choices (I'm not describing it very well) blah blah. Then he was like "Yeah. She came back from the land of the living." Which I laughed my ass off and called it a fail and him a dumb ass.

Yes I think I am guilty of using the word fail a lot but sometimes there are things that can be described like that. Also don't forget that the meaning of words changes as society changes. Maybe not even its meaning but just its context.

Oh there are many more of those popular words kicking around, they became the hip new thing or rather a social life preserver, when you can't coin your own opinions you just latch onto something popular to stay in the game.

It fell out of favor in my area a year ago to which I am ever thankful for. Fail is used pretty sparingly now. "Epic fail" is still used by one of my friends but I punch his arm every time he does it around me, making it feel less annoying.

Eh I don't really mind fail as long as it's used sparingly and with great justification. Fails of the Weak[sub]I always thought it was week[/sub]from Achievement Hunters is a great example. Yelling fail because someone did something stupid is not.

I have almost never said it, but I still watch fail videos every once in a while and think their funny. Also, I have never known anyone outside of the internet to say it so it honestly doesn't bother me. Plus, it's just a word.

I don't use it, and it annoys me when people over use it. If used only occasionally, then it isn't that bad. I just find it annoying when someone uses it to try to make someone else feel bad. I can't wait for this trend to die out. :)

To be honest I don't hear it too often, unless I actively seek it on youtube or the many 'fail' websites there are out there! The rest of the time I don't hear it... Then again I am in the military, and we have our own recurring phrases that come in and out of fashion...

(Oh, and I rarely see children... that might also be a factor!?)

Yeah, it really makes me cringe when the popular media tries to be "hip" and "in". It never makes them seem more relatable, though, because they are always late to the party.

OT: I say "fail" occasionally. Not all the time, though, like many do. It doesn't really have the same impact anymore, when anything is a fail.

Erm, you might want to expand on that before you get whacked with a low content post...

pithy (pth)
adj. pith·i·er, pith·i·est
1. Precisely meaningful; forceful and brief: a pithy comment.
2. Consisting of or resembling pith.

I never hear it any more, unless it's used in a reasonable way. Never in a, "OMGZZ U FAIL" way.

I completely agree, using words like fail anywhere but the internet makes you look like a massive tool. Especially if you say it to anything that someone else does, at that point you should put your face in a blender

"Fail" used to amuse me to some respect, now it's just looks like poor vocabulary.I don't mind it,but you need a pretty good joke for that punchline to make me believe it was necessary.

This. It was pretty much annoying trough 2009-2010 but nowadays it's not used that much. Can't remember the last time I heard it.

I shall put the word "fail" in the box with "text talk", the words "artistic integrity" and entitled.

That box is filling up with words that when I see people use I can instantly dismiss them as someone who's opinion I have no interest in.

I shall also throw the Royal Marines in there because they smell of wee.
