I've read the reviews, heard the hype, and It's recently been released. But I have a few things to clear up before I buy the game, though. If anyone can pitch in their own opinions of the game, and tell me exactly how tricky the controls are, it would be an excellent help.

Thanks for the posting (and please no flame wars...)

From what I've heard from my friends, it's good. Damn good. Let me put it this way: If you liked Kingdom Hearts, you'll like The World Ends With You.

Funny thing was, as soon as I saw Beat, I'm was all like "Woah, is that Sora?" My friend then explained TWEWY, and how it was developed by the same guys as KH. So, my assumption 'bout liking
KH and TWENY is based on some facts.

I like it. The combat controls are kinda tricky at first, but they are introduced slowly and you get plenty of time to learn them. I got used to them pretty fast. Can't add much more, except that I feel the hype is justified. I've never played Kingdom Hearts, so I can't say much about that connection.

Here, let me link you to a comic I wrote about The World Ends With You. It gives my first impressions of the game and more in the news post, so I save precious typing time.

World Ends With You Comic [http://www.plusonecomics.com/awinningformula.html]

The only thing I don't cover there is the controls, which are really tricky. The strategy for using them changes from chapter to chapter (can't go in depth due to spoiler risk), so you're constantly relearning how to fight. I just set it to "auto: fast" and took control during the tough fights. I wasn't really too keen on the idea (I SUCK at multi-tasking like that), but you may like it more than I did.

It's a good game man. If you need an RPG hand-held, pass up Crisis Core and go straight for The World Ends With You.

I HATE japanese RPGs, but i LOVE the world ends with you.

In fact, i started playing again yesterday (after a GTA IV hiatus), and i not once found myself wanting to go back to Liberty City.

The fighting systems is diverse and fun, especially if you are starting to become comfortable in the whole multitasking thing. The Item System (Armor and Weapons are replaced by "fashion clothing" whose effects are boosted or weakened by changing trends) might have a VERY questionable concept, but is very well done. And the Story, well, i still HATE the main protagonist (he becomes a better person, but especially in the beginning he's an unlikeable Emo Super-Asshole), but the story is very engaging due to it's episodic nature (1 Level = 1 Day, with a little substory and often a cliffhanger at the end) and is...well, i'd say good.

Also it's great how you gain XP for pretty much everything, even NOT playing the game.

The story is interesting, though the main character is annoying.

The battle system is both amazing/brilliant and incredibly annoying. It is VERY fast paced and occasionally VERY hard.

Ability Leveling and equipment management is fun and innovative.

Graphics are quite good for DS/Sprite graphics

Music is good if you liked Persona 3's music (J-Pop/Rock/hip-hop)

I love the game with 100% passion and have stuck with it even though after a while, the combat gets a little uncomfortable. I usually have to sit down and rest the DS on my leg/knee/a table in order to really get on with it. I think the game is fully deserving of its hype for being an immensely quirky, yet accessible little gem. And I don't mind Neku. Initially I hated the brooding, grumpy git but now I see him in a slightly different light and agree with his perception of the 'want-to-snap-your-neck-every-time-you-come-on-screen' Joshua. I want to snap his neck every... oh wait, I just covered that.

Thanks for the posts. I've decided that I am going to buy the game, and no-one's going to stop me now.

I saw a review for this game on the gaming show Good Game. It looks good but I'm not sure if I would like the fighting mechanic. I'm a big sucker for Turn based RPG's, anything else tends to disappoint me.

Yeah, saw that too. I like Good Game. very up-front, but not as in-your-face than ZP.

100% agree with apart from about Neku. I didn't mind him to start with. I actually felt a little sorry for him.

i've got it but i haven't played that much of it because i've got exams and i have to use every second of my free time for revision (that's right, even on the bus etc). but from what i've playeed of it it seems pretty good and i can tell it's the sort of thing i could very easly get obsesed with when i've got a bit more time on my hands. the dual screen combat is quite tricky at first but it's fun when you get it right and you don't even have to use both screens if you don't want to. i can only really think of two flaws. first, it's not that good to just pick up and play for 5 minutes. this is mainly because there is a LOT of dilogue. i'm talking metal gear quanitities here. so if you just want to go on for a short while, there's a fair chance that you won't actualy get to do any playing at all. and also the lyrics to the songs are pretty cheesy.

After playing through it, I think Neku is a parody of the famous emo characters from most Square franchises.

In any case, it's a pretty great game, with a very engaging storyline. The dual screen combat is damn near impossible to get, so I just suggest repeatedly pressing left or right. It's easier than trusting the computer to fight for you. And the soundtrack is really something else.
