I keep a baseball bat in the family car and a crowbar at home. I also carry around a swiss army knife. If anything happens and I didn't come to the rescue, then it's my fault entirely.
But mate, unless you know that the criminal won't act, you won't jump to the rescue.
Nobody wants to get stabbed over helping a stranger.
It's better to act as a deterrent as you're holding a crowbar rather than bashing them in the head with it, because it's very illegal.

Any serious study into crime fighting methods and past examples of vigilantism would suffice, psychological papers on related topics wouldn't hurt.

And what makes you think many comic writer's don't have these in mind when there writing their stories?

Many comics end up covering the problems with rogue vigilanties fighting for "justice" by their definition.

At the end of the day the only way I see to stopping crime fully would be to have some horrible Equilibrium style world where emotion etc is controlled and where we essentially become robots. Or at least one where our mind's are being watched to check for crimminal thoughts and stopped, essentially where we have no privacy.
At least that's roughly the way I see it, also I should mention I don't want to live in world's like these. I'll stick to the current world as it is.

Heh, we don't have heroes these days, we have 'role-models'. Or, if we do have heroes, then they are those people who risk themselves for others, or perhaps spend their lives serving others or some humanitarian cause without needing a soapbox to stand on. Nurses are heroes, firemen are heroes, democratic protesters in Egypt are heroes - because they purposefully chose to live for their causes and strive to make an impact as part of a larger body rather than admiring themselves in the mirror.

Legitimate heroism comes from the individual exploits of the common man. The person who, even if it's only this one time in his life, goes beyond what is expected of him and seemingly by a fluke achieves the unexpected. That's what reminds people that everything is possible. If all the people who do cool things are trained or have super powers, what hope should I have?

I really do think the world needs heroes.
There's certainly a surplus of villains.

I think what the world could use even more, is a lack of tolerance of unjust action.
If people would just stand up and say "no" more often; maybe we wouldn't need heroes.
I don't know... maybe we're all the heroes we'd ever need.

Kiddo, (and I assume you're a kid) you need to take note of the fact that in kickass and watchmen people die trying to play dress up. They die horribly. Perhaps the impression was somewhat lost on you in watchmen considering how Zach Snyder butchered that story, I wouldn't know I couldn't make it past the atrocious first part, but you need to carry away with you the idea that putting on a mask to fight crime probably won't end well.

If you really want to make a difference, forget the mask, forget vigilantism. Go make a lot of money so you can influence the system, enter into politics and see what you can do for causes you care about, become a watchdog journalist, look into law enforcement or just do some volunteer work. There's soup kitchens and relief organizations that could always use a helping hand.

I would never put on a mask to fight for justice in this world. I might consider putting on a suit though. Or even an apron.

Im 17 but at heart Im still much younger, and I do hope that in the future I can do some of the things you say. I actually want to become a lawyer 1) for the money and 2) because I think that I could make a difference in the world by using the legal system, as to what extent that difference could be I am uncertain yet.
