The Xbox 360 is an unbelievable console.

So I'm getting ready to play some good ol' Modern Warfare 2 (Haters gonna hate). Take the disc out of the case, seems normal except for all the minor scratches it has gained over the last year. I have it installed to the hard drive so those scratches aren't a problem. Over time, the disc has gained cracks in the useless plastic part in the very middle of the disc that did no harm either. I put the disc in, it's read by the 360, and I play private match for about 45 minutes. We decide to play online and that's when I get an "unreadable disc" error. I check the disc and it has a crack halfway through it. The 360's on a balanced, flat surface and is laying vertically. I also payed $100 to get this thing repaired about a month ago. I honestly don't know what could of caused this other than the console itself.

Maybe someone accidently stepped on it and although it didn't create a noticable crack it wore down the stucture of the disc causing a crack when the disc began to spin?

herp derp 360 sukz dude!

No really that's all I'm getting from this. Being mad doesn't warrant a thread. The only one that really cares about your console is you.

btw never had any problems with my 360.

So you had a broken disc? Well, it happens. Sometimes those cracks, when put under stress (such as the 1000+ RPMs that your average game console puts out) can split the disc wide open.

Sucks to be you, but it had nothing to do with the console specifically.

Gamestop sold me a used one exactly like this, I took it back and got another whilst watching them put the broken one right back. *facepalm*

I've never had that problem. So I'll just blame you.

Really, where is the discussion value? "Oh sorry" doesn't tell me much, and a console wars would just be STUPID.

That was already the problem. You normally don't get cracks in DVD, if you get them the disc is already doomed and spinning the disc around at crazy speeds will just enlarge them and split the disc, in the worst case it can actually explode in the drive. No idea what caused those cracks in the first place, could be anything, damaged on transportation, material error right from the factory, etc. Xbox360 however normally shouldn't be able to cause the initial cracks (just the famous circular scratches).

I have never scratched a game disc through normal usage - and there was a point where my wife and I were playing Halo 3 almost every night for a period of about 12 months. Disc still works perfectly to this day.

i just cant wait until all disks become obsolete ad we all have 10 terabyte hard rives with hundreds of games on then all accessible with a touch of a button

If I am reading you correctly, that means looking head-on, it's shaped like the letter I, right?

This is not how disc drives are meant to be oriented. Think about it; the disc should sit in the tray via gravity. Otherwise, it can easily tip around. I realize it often works for people just fine, but given the choice between horizontal: '---' or vertical: 'I' you should pick the former.

You'd think the disk would be making some weird noise while you're playing which causes you to check what's going on. Also why would you continue to keep putting in the disk if you notice that it scratches more every time you pull it out?

It's probably due to the case. My Modern Warfare 2 case cracked my disk.

Then again my old 360 cracked my Mass Effect and Rainbow Six Vegas disks, so it might just be the 360.

Or both.

The cracks come from the game's case. Activision uses really cheap cases for their games and the disks are really hard to take out of the cases, so a lot of the disks get small cracks in the middle. It's a very common problem for MW2 and Black Ops.

I will quote you "Over time, the disc has gained cracks in the useless plastic part in the very middle of the disc that did no harm either." Also "The 360's on a balanced, flat surface and is laying vertically." these two things together are what made the disc unreadable. The "useless" plastic in the middle keeps the disc centered. Sitting it vertically will only help the cause of the "useless" plastic, because weight will always be more on one side.
