I'm currently applying to a local theater, and I was wondering if any of you guys have theater experience? If not, would you like to take up acting as a hobbie?

Edit: Maybe this is a little too short. Other questions I have:
-Did you act on stage or behind the scenes?
-Did you play an important role or just a side character?
-Did you enjoy it? What did you like about it?
-Is it a good place to meet new people?

Yeah, I'm part of a local amateur dramatics group that has been running for well over 50 years. I've been a member about five years or so. Because it's am-dram there's a lot of stuff you can help out with, not just acting. My acting career started off back-stage and on curtains. If we're not on stage, we also help with lighting/sound, costume, catering... We have a lot of people who enjoy watching our plays with a cup of tea and a slice of cake!

I do, what do you want to know?
In what kind of plays did you act? Musicals? Was it just at school or in a real theater Did you enjoy it? Is it a good place to meet new people?

I've been in a couple small time drama things...

I had a good time, it was fun and I made some great friends in it!

Also a plus that I got to take time off of class for it, but thats just bonus points...

I've done musicals (I've got the voice for it) and I've done dramatic plays. Yes to both. I loved it, it's a fantastic place to meet people, provided you want to meet theater people.

If you're looking to get into theater the best advice I can give you is to find a way to relax that works for you. I've seen a ton of people who handle themselves fantastically during rehearsal, and once they get on stage, in front of an audience, they freeze like a deer in headlights (I've done so myself) one kid threw up, a grown man passed out, it get's rough.

Also, always show up for rehearsals, the best way to piss off your director is to skip out on your rehearsal.
