I'm coming to the end of my degree in Theatre Studies and I've learned a lot of theory and a little technical pizzazz but I'm getting this feeling that all is not well in the world of theatre and I'll tell you why.

The predominant form of contemporary theatre here in Britain is often described as 'post-dramatic' or 'postmodern' and doesn't conform to the ideas of story, characters, emotions etc. but prefers to look at things from a more conceptual angle. The acting is sometimes non-existent, significance is placed on minor actions or topics, the content is so self-referential and often obsessed with irrelevant detail and subject matter tends to err towards academic and over-done topics. Bluntly put, unless you have spent three years studying this shit then you have about as much hope of understanding it as I do getting a decent job based on this degree. As for actually enjoying one of these shows, you may as well sleep through them because entertainment is the last thing on the minds of modern performers, preferring to use you as some captive test subject for their ideas. After every show I see I often wonder, 'would anyone go to the theatre any more?'

And so I ask the Escapist. If it wasn't a big commercial number like (bleuch) High School Musical or (triple bleuch with streaks of blood) Cats, Why would you go to the theatre and what would you want to see?

I'mnot a big theatre person. I've seen a few West End show, a couple very obscure and odd. I just want to see something that's well written, well performed and for the love of god, please don't play down to your audience.

I want to see Avenue Q and Wicked.
But I would really rather just go to a concert.
I like music with my music, not annoying actors and "singers".
I hate singers.

I go to the theatre for culture, and the stories. Seeing how the tech crew did what with their usually tiny budget. Which actors are the best, etc. How much of a pompous ass the director is.

I myself am an actor AND tech crew-member. Yes I can do my own makeup, and I am not ashamed. XD

Always the best costumes for Halloween...

I recently went to a community theater (that's how we spell it in these redneck States, although I prefer yours) showing of Cannibal: The Musical. Mostly because my Mom knew the guy putting the whole thing together, and they had blood splatter the audience. Pretty funny.
I'm not too sure what draws me into a show, but then again I rarely go out at all.

I'm actually taking Higher Level IB theatre since I love it. We did a theatre night last year which was really fun and this year we're planning on doing a lot more. Right now though I'm working on a devised script with my friends.

I love theatre (I should, I am studying dramatic arts), but I don't get a lot of a chance to go, as the theatre scene where I live is very, very small.

I like theater. My personal favorite play is Sweeney Todd.

I'd not only watch it, I'd want to be in it.

I did the IB Theatre Arts course and that's what drove me to theatre but despite my university supposedly being one of the most prestigious for theatre studies I actually found my underfunded IB course to be more stimulating and providing a wider range of topics. Pretty much if you study theatre in England, get ready for the radical (and often non-sensical) feminism to dominate the horizons for a loooong time only to be displaced by modern dance and ridiculous use of video in performance. Seriously, because the film industry can give us better thrills the brains of contemporary performance seem to think that making theatre more like films is a winner

I prefer older plays like Fiddler on the Roof or maybe Shakespeare. There is one somewhat recent play called Urinetown that was quite entertaining, have you heard of it? It was meant to be a joke and therefore includes a lot of self referential jokes but I was thoroughly entertained. Anywho the theatre is still good in some ways and there are still many many talented people on the stage. So I enjoy going to see productions from time to time. It's not every ones cup of tea either way, so I don't force my interests on others, but there is something to be said for at least knowing about theatre versus just disliking it without giving it a shot.

I have this problem too, which is part of the reason I moved to study in the big city. Good shows :) Plus, the theatre in our home town back home I was a member of, so I was hard to go without knowing the entire cast and so not being able to be completely objective. I was only about an hours drive from Stratford-Upon-Avon though, and the RSC, but gettin there was a struggle without being able to drive and limits on train times.

But I do love theatre myself, waiting to get replies from our universities auditions right now; I hate waiting :(

Anyway, I really dislike conceptual theatre. Some of the basic principles are ok, and I enjoy stuff like Brecht. However, I much prefer more traditional stuff. Oh, and while we're on the subject...

I remember my sixth form, A-Level course. What the hell does the education system have against comedy? I constantly asked to do some funny pieces, but apparently we had to talk about drugs and prostitution. Thoroughly depressing. I love being able to go improvised comedy now :)

(triple bleuch with streaks of blood) Cats,
You make me sad inside. You're not one of those who thinks there's a special circle all warmed up in hell for musicals, are you?

I thought Death of a Salesman was great and I really like the theater, but I'd rather be on stage.

Yes, yes I am, apart from Gilbert and Sullivan. Cats took a perfectly sensible collection of poems and turned it into something gurning and devoid of any meaning. Musicals just don't go anywhere.

I don't think so,
I just think that it is now an out dated media form,
(like the newspaper, HA!)
