I call fake on this whole thing. Firstly, the police would not be able to comprehend such a situation. "You did what? With a what? Who? Can you prove this?" Secondly, the speed at which they positively identified the thief through the camera lens is questionable. Did they look at a list of suspected PS3 burglars just looking for that last big score? Did the poster know the guy beforehand? Wouldn't it be smarter to sell the merchandise on ebay and buy new? He happened to have his PSP with him... at work? I'd like to work wherever he's working.

On a related note, this was a plot point on the Showtime series Brotherhood. The old mobsters got a PS3 in the bar and one of them said, "Hey, we could play online," but the other one quickly shot him down saying the cops could easily track it.

How do we know the guy in the picture was the thief? Maybe he was just the innocent recipient of a stolen gift? Poor guy.
The fact that the Police recognised the thief from the photo would suggest otherwise.

you'd think that not connecting it to the internet would be the smart thing but i guess criminals aren't always the brightest bulbs in the box
No kidding, some guy stole my cellphone, but was stupid enough to place THREE calls on it before deactivating it, I was able to call the numbers he called and identify the bastard, after threatening to turn him in, he got it back to me.

Seems more like a fraud of some sort, or a candidate for the darwin awards.
Why? did he hit him with a deadly poison dart out of the PS3 by controlling it with the PSP?

1) Because after all, all Policemen are PC Plod who don't know a Mouse from a Macintosh.
2)It's likely that whoever stole the console has a history of theft, or is at least known to the local police on some level.
3) I carry mine with me pretty much wherever I go. It's my music player and has a digital camera attachment, just because he's at work with his PSP doesn't mean he spends his working hours playing games.

@ the ebay thing... Probably not. If he wanted to shift something quickly, he would have sold it on at a car boot sale or similar. Ebay creates a paper trail, and gives you the challenge of telling the buyer why you have none of the docs/boxes.

Possession of stolen property is a crime in itself. The guy is still boned.

PS3 - it really does everything! It even helps retrieve itself after being stolen!

I guess when Sony PR guys thought up their new slogan, they couldn't even imagine it'd turn out to be truth in advertising =) .

So you think that this thief gave everything to this "innocent recipient". I suspect you of just playing devil's advocate, but still, come on.
On topic: Ha. The danger with consoles becoming more expensive was that it is now worth the thieves stealing them. Still, if they keep being this stupid, we don't really have to worry.

Aren't consoles expensive enough without trying to add some anti-theft device to it? I'm glad this guy thought to get a photo of this lousy thief by way of the webcam on his PS3, and that the photo was of such good quality that the police could identify him, but frankly everyone isn't going to be that lucky. Had the thief not plugged in the cam, then the victim would never have recovered his console so relatively easily. And do you think the cops give a crap about a stolen video game system? He probably called them up and said someone stole his PS3, and the dispatcher had no clue what a "PS3" is. Instead of putting anti-theft devices on consoles, why not invest in improving your home security? As a general rule, you'd be a lot better off that way instead of having your PS3 as a watchdog for your house while you are away, right?

JUSTICE! It feels good, however I can't shake this feeling that we're oblivious to a device that can be used Big Brother style. Hell, if you think about it, add this tech to the Wii and you transform the Wii Fit from a fun way to work out into the first chapter of 1984 (I refer to when the main character wakes and must hurry to his TV for a government controlled workout, which is also the system used to take census of each society member). I know it is all conspiracy theory, but we definitely don't need to make oppression any easier than it should be. Just saying.
