But wouldn't the desired effect be better conveyed if animated smiley's were used?

I wouldn't go that far though chances are they would get abused. The idea of themed smileys would be cool though. Who hasn't wanted to see a Gordon Freeman smily knocking out a combine with a tiny crowbar?

An animated smiley like those shown above often detract from the message I'm trying to convey. They ruin the emotion.

What's better are reaction images, but this forum isn't a good place for throwing those around. Reaction images are much better since you can just take a fancy image from whatever you find and throw it up to show what your current mood is. Considering there's so many different images to use as material and so many different ways to convey the same emotion, it works out quite well.

No, I dislike animated smileys. Skype's, for example, annoy me. For :D, on skype the smiley appears to be laughing. Static character smileys such as :D ;) D: ^^ convey emotion far better than anismileys.
