The purpose of "Theme and Variation" is actually very simple: We bring together a bunch of a lot of videos of different people performing the same piece of music.
In most cases, we'll likely talk about what we like about each rendition, but criticisms and outright loathing of certain variations are welcome. This is the Internet, after all; hatred is to be expected.
Since (I hope) there will be a bunch of a lot of videos, I would ask that everyone put the embeds inside a spoiler, just to make life easier for everyone.

Today's Theme: Amazing Grace, the sung Variations! Yes, I'm starting us with a Theme so widely known and covered and re-covered, I have to specify what kinds of Variations I want.

<youtube=s1lSMXE3W8w> I think the reason why I like this Variation, aside from Mr. Robeson's voice, is how it comes off as simple. Honest, almost. Like a genuinely spiritual man doing a special performance in church. Religious overtones aside, it's a marvelous performance that tickles my eardrums just how I like it.

<youtube=IhfpVwdDzbU> I'm such a huge fan of this Variation for largely the same reason as Paul Robeson's rendition, it sounds like Miss Misako Yamashita is singing this with real, honest emotion. Or, at the very least, she's not simply doing this for a paycheck, there's actual effort being put forth. Oh, and the constantly ascending pitch is a nice touch, even if it's only there because it sounds cool.

Alright, I'll bite.

Not necessarily because it's the best version (it isn't), but because it's worth seeing the "King of Rock and Roll" try to take on one of the most mournful songs in pop culture.
