So...hi!
My all time favourite game is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
That alone makes you awesome in my book.

*Gives Macgyvercas Seal of Approval*

EDIT: Oh, right. The topic. Ummm, I don't really remember the response to my first thread.
For Halloween I carved the Triforce into a pumpkin!
It was quite the design. Truly.

My all time favourite game is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I watch dramas, two of my favourites being You?re Beautiful and Hanazakari no Kimitachi e. Cardcaptors is awesome, and Trigun is amazing. I?m also a Vampire Knight and Inuyasha fan. Currently I?m watching Code Geass and Bleach. I?m trying to become fluent in Mandarin and Hungarian, so if anyone knows some good learning sites, please share?

I... forget the reception on my first post.
And welcome to the escapist, I know that I can speak for myself, and possibly other people when I say that we enjoy getting new members.

Basement, cake, all that.

Not sure what my first reception was...ok it was a discussion about LOTRO. Guess it's what I get for being a lurker :)

Greetings to you. I am slightly amused by how this introduction thread was set up... and slightly confused about the golf cart thing...

My first post was responding to something about Spyro. I got the exact response I expected (none). I dunno why I choose to start posting then.

I joined and was met by Neonbob shortly thereafter. We then plotted for me to change my name, post a lot and take over the world to rid it of whales!

First post, so please bear with me.

I've been lurking on this site for the last few months, reading the articles and getting a feel for the forums, and this topic seems to come up quite often. I'm old enough to remember the average used game costing between five and fifteen dollars, which also makes me old enough to remember something about the way games were priced back then; the price almost always dropped low enough that a new copy was competitive with a used one. Up until Gamestop bought out EB games, and gained a virtual monopoly over the used market, used games were cheap enough to make buying new right when they came out a bad idea unless you had the money and couldn't wait. However, I bought almost as many new games at the time as I did used, because publishers actually tried to compete with used prices.

Now, I don't mean that the prices for brand new games were significantly different -- actually, they've been pretty constant for at least twelve or thirteen years -- but even as recently as 2003 or so, games would be re-released in a heavily discounted form about a year after the initial release, assuming they did well enough to warrant it. I remember buying AAA PC games for $10 brand new, and PS1 and PS2 games for $15-20. Today, thanks to Gamestop's monopoly, and corporate greed on the whole, we no longer get these kinds of discounts. This is the real reason games are too expensive these days; there is no real competition from used games, and as a result, no reason to significantly cut the price over time.

TL;DR

Games are expensive now because without true competition from used games, the publishers no longer have any reason to cut prices.
My first post. I was pretty much ignored, I'm actually not sure when people started responding to my posts, but it wasn't in that thread -- I had three posts, two of which directly quoted other members, but none of which were responded to. Somehow it's fitting that I've put in a good five or six posts today on essentially the same topic as my first post.

My first post was about why I regretted paying full price for Bioshock.

Bioshock

it's suprising that the game that was supposedly the game that won so many awards got boring after the first playthrough. It was fun, but after you beat it once, its worthless.
I bought it for $60... worst financial descision of my life, that 60 dollars could have been used for so much more...

it's a game to rent, not buy

Now unless I try games, I won't buy right away, and reviews don't help, they all said Bioshock was great... only for the first playthrough

the only exception for this is Haze for the PS3, and the reason for that is that it is being made by the creators of Goldeneye for the N64, possiably the greatest FPS of all time, and the Timesplitters games, games that were always fun.
Can't remember the general response though.

I guess I was ignored, if you don't count the fact that the person I quoted replied back. It was one of those "sarcasm doesn't work well in text" moments. We were talking about Nintendo getting patents for those in-game walkthroughs.

To Miss Sky: Welcome to the Escapist and enjoy your stay. Hope you have fun.

Eh, I never got a welcoming when I first joined, just someone complaining I wasn't using proper punctuation...

Also @WeOwntheSky: Hello and welcome, I hope your time here is an enjoyable one.
Feel free to ask any questions.

I think we meet on a Forum Game about a week into my stay. "In Case Of..." it was called or something. Or maybe "Good Idea, Bad Idea", one of those two, way back when I was indeed Sasquatch99. *Adds you to the list of people that still know my old username* But yeah, you said hi to me back then. :3
I'm inclined to believe it was "Good Idea, Bad Idea." Simply because I don't remember posting that much in "In Case Of..."
:p
Also, YES! I remember things! WOooo! XD

Now, your name I cannot remember. Only that it was letters and numbers at the end.
I'm so glad you came to the Forum Games first. It was fun meeting you early :D

I am relatively new here, and really only a few people have been nice. I was told to piss off because I disagreed with him. But I figured this would happen having been a lurker on site for nearly a year. On other sites, the Escapist forums are known as rude. But I like to think we are just opinionated.

People seriously consider the Escapist forums rude? The mods crack down on ad hominem attacks, big time. I see plenty of civil arguments out here, but no gamefaqs style flame wars -- if anything, we're too polite at times.
