My highschool had one. I used to the circumventor sites to get around. The school frequently blocked wikipedia, google, etc. Funnily enough, while sites like Questionable Content, XKCD, and safe humor sites were blocked, the Encyclopedia Dramatica was never blocked. Somehow it manages to slip past most webfilters.

P.S. - Anyone know of some good sites I could try which are similar to Snopes in that it's just stories and interesting articles? Anything else will probably be blocked.
Try TV Tropes [www.tvtropes.org]. It can keep me reading for a while. Quite humourous, too.
Guess what. They blocked that, too.
What? Why? It's inoffensive and has nothing inappropriate on it. You can block 4Chan, and I'll understand. But block my pointless wastes of time, and you shall PAY!
They do that to all sites, eventually.

I mean, they blocked www.homestarrunner.com. Guess wehat it was bloked under?

Opinion.

Yeah, that was the category.

o ya lord krunk.. sorry to say i like your old avatar better
Yeah, I know.

I'll keep this one until I find my original or find another avatar that clearly defines me.

But honestly, Boyd Cooper would have to be my favourite videogame character ever.

I too have had trouble with the blasted DET blocks in my school. The funny thing is that they blocked the Robocup Junior website until my had of computing had to call the guys up... he wasn't too please.

As for ways to get past the blocking, I'm going to try and use ftunnel and the proxies. Thanks guys... heh, most people in my school have thumb drives with Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 64, or Counter Strike on them, so we don't get bored. Much.

I spent a full lesson trying to break through that damn filter and get here. I really needed to see what was going on. I didn't make it but it was better than doing whatever I was supposed to.

No one likes that Filter. Not even the teachers. Art teachers can't use the net, Science teachers can't use it Geography and history can barely use it and the students can't use it.

Whats the point of paying for the Internet to begin with?

I don't know whether you're using the same filter (I don't know where you go to school), but my Geography teacher knows the guy that created the filter.

Needless to say, the guy gets punched every time they meet.

I live in NSW but I thought the Filter was the same in all states.

Ask your teacher to punch him exta hard for old Fire Daemon.

At some point in high school... may have been Freshman year... we'd hop on the classroom computers and play Quake with other kids who'd finished their classwork and were just dicking around. And this was after my Honors Science class, lol. There was always a race to get the work for the day done (even your homework) so you were allowed to go play. It was like a reward, ensuring that all of us did our work and even got our homework done. We enjoyed it, got good grades, and my teacher avoided talking for an hour and a half. It was a nice, balanced idea.

Somewhere towards the end of my high school career, we had strict dress codes and the web browsers wouldn't even go to Wikipedia. >.<

Yay for going through private school for my final years. Getting around filters is a hell of a lot easier when you're only fighting your "math/computer" teacher.

Seriously if you're having trouble with your filter and desperately want to always get around them, send me a PM and I'll talk you through it. Technique will also work for the governments current "filter-teh-intarwebs" initiative.

Cheers.
