I recently saw the trailer for Toy Story 3. For those of you who don't know, it revolves around Woody and the gang trying to escape a daycare center after they're donated by a now college aged Andy.
I don't know about any of you, but I grew up with the original Toy Story. It was one of my favorite movies, must have seen it ten thousand times. To hear that in the latest sequel, Andy's about as old as I am, and moved on from his beloved toys... It rocks me to the core, man. The world's a harsh enough place. Why does Andy have to grow up, too, you know? It just seems so messed up to me.

So Escapist, here's my question to you; Have you ever seen a sequel to a beloved movie that did something completely off-the-wall weird? Maybe killed off a character, changed actors for an existing character, or completely 180'd the story?

personally, I really didnt have much attached to Andy... he was more of a plot device character anyway.

and besides, its PIXAR. They have already shown us that they can take a very serious topic and a very sad and serious character and make it into a HILARIOUS and fun movie (UP)

So I am not really worried about it, The trailer already gives me hope

Long Live the reign of PIXAR.

They can do no wrong. So i'm not worried. If they can make a trash-bot that knows less than 4 words show more emotion than any holywood actor then they can pull anything off.

i reckon it's almost a required sequel,as the second movie raises quite a few questions about how the toys will be treated when Andy grows up. Could be interesting to see how they deal with it considering Jessie has already gone through the ordeal and warned Woody against returning.

if anyone can do a sequel like this it's pixar, so optimistically looking forward to it :)

Hey, I'm not saying it'll be a bad movie. Like most of you are saying, it's Pixar, and I've never seen a Pixar film I didn't like, so it'll probably be a modern classic.

It's just kind of weird for me seeing Andy all grown up. It's like when Nickelodeon stopped airing Rugrats to start showing that "All Grown Up" spinoff, you know? Kids in fiction aren't supposed to grow up, it's just too depressing and bizarre.

I hear what youre saying. It is different to see a grown up Andy. But at the same time... its been since 1999 since we had a Toy Story movie... so it kind of makes sense.

It should be called Toy Story: Ten Years Later or something. But then that sounds like an action movie...

Modern Warfare 2.

See, I thought the first game was a dark, semi-realistic tragic war tale that covered surprisingly deep themes.

The second game is the narrative equivalent of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

Yeah it will seem odd that Andy will be the same age as me. But at least its giving a new aspect to the story and of course its Pixar. They can do no wrong :D.

Andy's not even really a character in the movies. He's more like a setting piece. A plot contrivance. How the characters (the toys) react to the changing environment of an aging child has been THE central theme throughout the whole series. Andy aged between the first and the second movies. It stands to reason that he'd age between the second and the third.

Halo. It went from aliens taking control of a ring-world weapon that 'their' ancestors created so they could take over the universe; to aliens trying to control a ring-world that they didn't understand, in hopes of going on a great field trip.

You are the only person.

Up,Wall-E, Ratatouille...Jesus, most of their films make me tear up, I create about 20 tears a year, 50% on purpose when I mourn my birth.

Go watch real friggin' movies chump. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pixar_films

"COUGH COUGH the Matrix COUGH COUGH" OMFG! did that not live up to the visions and art of the 1st film and the Animatrix. Those last two got all Twilight on us. Nice catch!

Yes, yes you are. Pixar has been the name in quality animated films for the last 15 years, even rivalling Disney (despite being the same company now).

On topic, there was little other direction for the movie to go in.

Massive geek alert!

Dragon Ball Z. Yes i know its not a movie,but it fits each of the given examples;

Killed off character - Vegetas death on namek and suicide to kill Buu,Trunks' death by Cell, etc.

Changed actors - This ones a bit weaker, but the FUNimation remake of the sieries for ONdemand replaced almost every voice actor. And in case your wondering, yes,i know close to everything about DBZ....

180'd story - Goku forfieting his fight against Cell and replacing himself with Gohan,Buu reviving after Vegeta taking his life with the most heart-wrenching explosion (imo) in the series,Ginyu taking Goku's body, you name it!

Have you seen UP?
That was that one movie.

Truly incredible, by the way.

Also, I didn't mind Ratatouille and The Incredibles, but I wouldn't class either of them as good, merely average.

UP was amazing.

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. They got rid of the fucking cars! You can't do that!

That 70s Show. Topher Grace left the show. That's when the show should end. Don't go another season.

About Pixar: Their movies should not be winning "best animated," they should be winning "best picture."

Why does nobody agree with me that Cars is the best Pixar movie?

I'd love for Andy to get to college/uni and bump into Sid from the first movie having not seen him since he moved house. They could make him really messed up or a born again Christian or something due to being traumatised by living toys.
