I've seen people (not just on this forum)say time and time again that nintendo should "stop milking the old franchises and make a new IP", but to be honest why should they?

They have a range of memorable characters and series' which are all different to each other and some haven't even seen a release in recent times(F-zero, Pikmin, Starfox to name a few).
Creating a new IP means they have to run the risk of it flopping terribly and being a waste of time and effort.

So, I ask you this, what would be the point in creating a new franchise when still have quite a few well established series' in reserve?

As long as they can make it fun and actually worth buying, I won't mind getting Elder Scrolls Infinity, etc.

Something to excite gamers of course! Nintendo has, btw, introduced new IPs. Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Nintendogs, etc. But since they are called "non-games", they are calling for a new IP.

I partly can't blame them. This generation, Nintendo has almost abandoned all their secondary franchises to concentrate entirely on their three main franchises. In a matter of 4 years, we'll have 4 Marios, 4 Zeldas, 3 Metroids. Where is Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Starfox? (Yeah I know, Command) Pikmin, Pilotwings? etc.

It's not a bad thing to want to gain money, but visiting the well too many times is never a good thing in the long run. There are only so many Zeldas that a gamer wants for a generation.
That's why gamers want something new. And not just new gameplay ideas, but a change in settings and situations. (Not Just Link goes to Kakariko and then Hyrule and then battles Ganondorf by reflecting his projectiles and saving the captive Zelda)

Except that many of those franchises have begun to stagnate heavily. Not that I don't love 'em (well except for Pikmin), but all good things must come to an end.

I think there needs to be a pilotwings, zelda, and mario brothers crossover.

Link does badass acrobatics in an aircraft, while firebombing mushroom kingdom from the air.

Hey, as long as the games they pump out are damn good, I don't care if its Zelda number 97.
Though they really do need to branch out a little.
