Sigh the thief trails don't get what thief is about. The thrill was never about losing the guards, it was about getting your targets and no one ever knowing you were there.
You must have missed the change to the stealth genre in the last decade.

Letting no-one know you were there, by not being seen and leaving no trace you were there has become 'boring'. It much more 'fun' to just slaughter everyone. After all its still stealth if its from the shadows and no one see you, right? And if there's no survivors no one can say you were there.

It's sad, but the traditional stealth genre is a very niche market now, as modern gamers seem to have little patience for it.

If anything, "true" stealth has had a resurgence lately. Human Revolution, while flawed as a Deus Ex game, was a very good stealth/infiltration game if you chose to play it that way. Ditto for Dishonored. The difference with Thief is that there should be no choice involved. You are a Thief, period. Guns blazing should be heavily frowned upon, as it was in the previous titles.

Is nobody else bothered by the appropriation of indie game Monaco's tag line "What's yours is mine?" It seems in poor taste for a AAA game to do this...

I missed Garrett. Not sure who this guy is, wasn't he in AFI? :p

They totally did not get the character. It's not just the lack of Russell, it's the writing. Hopefully there's some silly twist where we find out this is the real Garrett's angsty son.
Actually, I think this is the game that all the "more female protagonists in games" people should be up in arms about, given the ending to Thief 3. Then they could have her say things like that and it wouldn't be a problem, because it wouldn't be Garrett.

Not mangling a well loved character, pleasing the feminists, *and* keeping continuity all at once? YES PLEASE!

Miss you? Buddy, I don't even know you.

To be fair, the trailer for Thief 2 wasn't reflective of the actual gameplay, either:
Yes, and to be fair, it's tough to show off gameplay when it consists primarily of "Where's he going? What's he doing? Where's he going? What's he doing? Where's he going? What's he doing? Where's he going? What's he doing? Where's he going? What's he doing? QUICK QUICK MOVE ACROSS THE ROOM HIIIIIIIIDE Where's he going? What's he doing? Where's he going? What's he doing? Where's he going? What's he doing? Where's he going? What's he doing?" But at this point, something more than a sly, winking "Hey, Garrett's back and now he's a ninja" is really overdue.

And those two old Thief trailers are a LOT cooler than this new one, too.

Oh I agree, I love that old Dan Thron art from the first two games. I'm just trying to find a bright side to this game and hold onto the possibility that maybe the gameplay will be good.

Yeah, that's disappointing as well. We don't even need Garrett, his arc was wrapped up nicely. But if we're going to be Garrett, we might as well be the Garrett we actually know and love.

It might be petty of me and I don't know why but that bow annoys me.
It bothers me too, because that's not how bows work if you want them to be able to fire an arrow further than your toes. Plus it was what Hawkeye did in The Avengers.

I'll probably give this a miss and wait for a Thief game. Shan't hold my breath.

I find it kinda funny that nobody has mentioned the thing that irks me most about the trailer.

"What's yours is mine".

This aint thief. This is 50 cent.

I'm confused...why is everyone saying that the trailer was action heavy? Most of it was him sneaking or running and one guy shot an arrow at him. There wasn't any actual fighting. Actually, with CG brawls being popular trailer fodder these days, this trailer seemed refreshingly low-key to me.

I never played the original games, but I enjoyed Human Revolution so I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

This is not Thief. This is a developer with absolutely no imagination what-so-ever spending a pile of cash in order to make a generic action game with the hopes that fans of Thief will buy their game. This far more resembles... GI Joe? No? Ah, this far more resembles Transformers.

Looks like an advert for a low-budget TV series.

I have never seen a good live-action teaser for a game. Not. Ever.

I agree, there's so much negativity surrounding this game it can only end in a load of confirmation bias. The amount of people complaining about how mainstream it is, and even a transformers comparison a little above, has my hipster-o-meter going haywire.

The choice of voice-actor for Garret was based on how well he could speak the lines while doing "epic" stunts in motion capture gear according to the developer. That is just one of many stupid choices these clueless people made in this AAA game formula for a pandering pile of digital shit.

The gaming collapse cannot happen soon enough.

I still miss you, because you changed voice actor and sound nothing like the character I came to enjoy :)

Oh well maybe Garret with one T will be just as good as Garrett with two T's. Maybe Garrett finally did make a big score and just retired leaving Garret in his place. Like the Princess Bride and Dread Pirate Roberts.

In an effort to excite people they seem to have lost what made the first games so much fun. You were the outsider, there for yourself and only yourself. You did not enjoy what you did, or at least you wouldn't admit it to anyone, it was a way of life. Merely a means to an end, that end being a peaceful retirement with a bunch of lovely wenches and all the beer and meat you could eat. This put you in a position where you could life that role. Listening in on conversations. Ruffling through things. It cast you like a true thief. Not as a Robin Hood high action robber.

Now the heist is the end, it is the goal. There is nothing that motivates you to it. You have now become the classical tabbletop mistake, where a character is there not because he has to be there but because he is supposed to be a thief.

"Did you miss me?" They put that in the trailer, implying it's a sequel... but then they just call it "Thief" instead of "Thief 4." How does that make sense?

Well, since you're obviously not Garret, but just some pretender, then no. No, I did not miss you. And I wish you would go away.

wow. for all the "bring back the old games" people sure do whine a lot.

its a trailer, for a stealth game. wth do you expect? 5 minutes of sitting in the shadows?
you know what, i still remember thief 2, and i still remember me having trouble with it. the first mission didnt allow you to kill anyone (iirc). the next one? i shoot up as many people as i had arrows, and even lack thereof didnt stop me from swording the spiders. did my game suddenly explode? nope.

was that how the game was supposed to be played? who the hell cares, as long as you are having fun!
and guess what happened later. i have taught myself to play it "proper". that took time. time that i probably wouldt take if i hadnt have fun. guess what reboots are supposed to do. yep - bring in the fresh meat, because the old one is getting smelly and whiny indeed....

it might very well turn out to be a very very bad game, who the hell knows - i dont, and neither do you.
and ffs, who is stopping you from doing pacifists runs? even if there are no "achievements" for it. why do you suddenly care for achievements? i dont recall there being need for them in the old days... people were simply happy with playing the damn game....
