and dont even start that a game like thief wouldnt sell well today since rise of the triad, Shadow warrior, brutal doom and others have shown that this claim is complete bullcrap.
Actually those games didnt sell that much, they just had a budget that was right for the type of game that they made. The problem with Thief and Hitman Absolution is that they are trying to make AAA games out of what are niche games and the things that they use to atract the mainstream audience is probably what makes the budget skyrocket in the first place (over blown marketing to make sure that people that werent aware of the franchise are now, a lot of dialog and cutscenes because of that movie experience that the mainstream likes so much, big set pieces that are very expensive to make, working on features that are most of the times disabled by the fans of the series to help newcomers that want to play the game like if it was something entirely different from the rest of the series).
The Dark Mod kept it simple and it already is better then Thief (the reboot at least), stealth is a niche genre and in no fucking way should they try to change it up for the purpose of selling more copies if it means that at the end of the day it really needs to sell more copies to make profit.
By trying to be a game for everyone it ends up being a game for no one, very few game can be for everyone and make profit and anyone with a brain could see that a niche game series certainly wouldnt be one of those (all I can think up are The Sims and Minecraft).
