I was thinking about things I experienced when I was younger and the impact it had on me. But looking back at it, it seems a little tainted because there came an avalanche of i.e. merchandise or fanboys which/who forever left a bad aftertaste. Here are some examples:

- The Crow: I absolutely adored the movie. Loved the story, cinematography, soundtrack and so on... But then came Emo...

- Indiana Jones: Tried to not get excited after hearing there was a fourth installment in the making... But then I actually saw it...

- Final Fantasy VII: The game was great for it's time and deserves the praise given to it... But it spawned legions of aweful fanzombies...

Watchmen- My favorite book of all time and not just comic. (Book as in any collection of pages bound together.) It was a work of art that not only changed the medium it used during it's publication in 1986, (So much so that they tried to rename comics into stuff like "Illustrated Stories", "Graphic Novels" and "Sequential Art") but changed my way of thinking forever. It made me start writing and drawing more and eventually entered an art school dreaming that one day maybe I could create something that was half as good as it. Now it has a large fanbase of young boys fed entirely on a diet of action movies that only checked it out because the trailer looked cool and they enjoyed "300". Just go on IMDB and you'll see it's fanbase only denouces anyone who didn't like it as either a conservative prude who couldn't stomach sex and violence or a purist loser who couldn't stand the fact that they changed the ending. They even flame and send hate mail to the creator Alan Moore.

-The Army Men series- The first Army Men and Sarge's Heroes were sweet treats that made me cherish and appreciate childhood even more. Then instead of churning out more sweet goodness, the developers took laxatives and churned out liquid turd after liquid turd.

-The Tomb Raider series- I'm glad that this series is finally recovering, but this was a bastion of third person gaming history that inflated itself with oversized breasts and underdeveloped excuses for sequels. One of many series that corporations dragged on and over exploited due to greed.

Super Smash Brothers - SSB was great back in the N64 days and a massive improvement when Melee came out but after waiting for 2 years for Brawl to finally come to Australia, I learnt to not follow hype anymore.

I don't know, how about the 3RD REICH! Yes, I'm pretty sure they ruined themselves with all their backstabbing and in-fighting.

The Matrix - I like to pretend the two sequels never happened (though I did like The Animatrix).

Halo, because it focused too much on multiplayer. I mean, seriously, reducing a weapon's effectiveness because it was too good at killing the enemy?
I wouldn't have cared if they made the game with two teams, one for multiplayer and one for single player, and changed the weapon behaviour for those two modes but:

Officer: "Chief, you know those really effective weapons you used last time?"
MC: "Yeah."
Officer: "Well, they were too strong, use these weaker ones."
MC: "..."
Officer: "Oh, you are now allowed to use two weapons at once, but you're not allowed to accurately aim while using them."
MC: "... yes, sir."
Officer: "Your armour plating was also too expensive, so we figured you could survive with only your shields."
MC: "Hey, this is a lot lighter, it means I can ru... fuck, I have to move slower now?"
Officer: "You're right, but you are allowed to jump on vehicles to take control of them, we also placed a speed limit on your suit to improve safety."

*during the time between Halo 2 and 3*

Officer: "Chief, you are too good with grenades, from now on you're only allowed to carry two of any type."
MC: "Any other limitations, sir?"[/sarcasm]
Officer: Well, actually, we decided to let you use your old guns.."
MC: "AWESOME" *starts calling all his friends for a party*
Officer: "... but we changed them a bit."
MC: *trying to find a corner to cut himself and cry*
Officer: "First, you're not allowed to carry as much ammunition as before."
MC: *searching for his suicide pills*
Officer: "Second, we have upgraded your pistol.."
MC: "Great, where is it, I can't wait to test it."
Officer: "..we had to sacrifice stopping power and the scope, but it is a lot prettier now."
MC: *tries to kill self with it but fails*

Gotta love the empire built to last for eternity.

Also I wish I had never payed for that copy of KOTOR 2. I just loved the first one too much to accept that nonsense it called a story. Slightly better combat mechanics though, but still nowhere near as good as it should have been.

The game was released about 75% complete. A lot of those missing files are found on the discs but there wasn't enough time to make the actual quests and locations for them. Fortunately people are trying to fix this problem [http://www.team-gizka.org/]

It's not really something that ruined itself, but the publisher ruined the game.

I'm sorry... TOMB RAIDER RECOVERING?! You could take out the Tomb Raider title, and replace it with "Bad Controls, But BOOBS!" and it would still be the same as a Tomb Raider game, and sell as well(which is sad).

Rainbow 6 and Ghost Recon. Infact the Tom Clancy name in gaming as a whole. Though I've been told the Splinter Cell games are OK, but havent played them myself.

Soviet Union's an even better example. They eventually collapsed under their own weight.

Otherwise, Michael Jackson. It's easier to pretend that he doesn't exist past 1995, so I can enjoy Beat It and Smooth Criminal to the fullest extent.
