Reading Forlong's thread about what should be made into games got me thinking about books and films that I love that would be horrific as video games.

So, in your opinion what films/books/pet foods should NEVER be made into games?

To get the ball rolling, my choice,

The Divine Comedy... oh wait... ok to one of my other favourite books then, The Princess Bride...

oh for the love of... any chance The Count of Monte Cristo could be left alone?!

Basically all of them. Film and book narratives don't work well in game format.*

*Unless your name is Harlan Ellison.

Spin-offs, on the other hand, might work. See also: Witcher games.

I disagree . I think it's possible for a good game adaptation of a movie (within reason of course). Because a video game can largly expand the world of a film or could be on par with a book . It's just that most games based on book/films are cash-in and the proper amount of effort has not be put in most of them ( exceptions like golden eye 007 exist)

However i do not think games translate well into film nor movies. A movie or book based on a game is VERY VERY hard to make ( especially a film).

Justin Bieber: The Experience.

Like the Michael Jackson game, but without the one saving grace of the King of Pop's timeless songs. Thriller, Beat It or Smooth Criminal are awesome enough that you'll want to forgive even the most phoned in gameplay. Baby? Not so much.

But wouldn't expanding on the previous work be like a spin-off? I mean, if you adapt a movie or a book into a game, all you'll have is a pretty linear game. You'll have to introduce action that is not covered in the original work - isn't that a spin-off? Or am I misusing the terms.

No, because I haven't gone over the most terrifying part yet: the high probability they'll make a quick cash-in with his face slapped on it.

Sure, it'll be garbage, but that won't matter because of its massive audience of mindless drones otherwise known as fanboys/girls. So it will sell. Which in publisher-speak is code for "make sequels". And there will be more than one.

Rape... oh wait.
Oh Japan.

OT:
Factory work?
It's hard, because even boring or awful sounding games (except rape, and pedophilia) games could make it as ironic indie/flash games.
