We all get those moments where things are going to be tough or challenging, but then you find things to be a lot easier and go a lot smoother than you initially thought. This would be the case for me on two occasions in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

The Lagiacrus is hyped to no end about being super super tough and hard and all that fun jazz. Demotivationals on it, whenever I Googled him, threads from everywhere saying he was impossible were all over the place. So I thought I was going to fight something mondo powerful. Aside from that, everyone's advice was to use the Lance. Stray from slow weapons otherwise. I even had someone tell me I was making a dumb mistake by going to fight him wearing the Gobul armor set. Lagiacrus uses lots of thunder attacks, and that particular armor set has -15 thunder resistance.

I also thought I was going to have a really hard time with him because my skills underwater with a Switch Axe were...not up to par, let us say. Then I actually went and fought the Lagiacrus in earnest. My first time ever fighting it in the water(I ignored it during the first quest it appears in). And surprisingly, I did really, really well.

Apparently I'd unconsciously gotten infinitely better underwater with a Switch Axe(probably from all that Gobul farming I did) and I kinda tore him a new one. And negative thunder resistance only matters when you're hit with thunder attacks, because I beat him without suffering any thunder damage at any point in the battle. Needless to say, things went significantly better than expected, and I felt rather good to do so well against what would seem to be an intense challenge.

Next up would be usage of the Bow. I tried it and hot damn I couldn't hit jack. My aim was way too high, way far off and generally I was trash with that weapon. But then I started tinkering with my ranges, bought a few coating for my arrows and actually managed to master the manual aim, despite its super awkward controls. And now I'm actually pretty competent both on land and underwater with a Bow. Things here also went much better than expected.

So what've you managed to conquer? What challenges presented themselves to you and you thought "Oh shit oh shit oh shit" only to come out like, "That's it?"

Feel free to brag about moments where your badassery levels were so high, the challenge had to defend itself from you! :D

Happened to me last week, the very first time I got invaded in Demon's Souls.

I had just finished killing a Demon, and had revived. My wife told me to go back and level up (I had almost 30.000 souls) but I decided to move up instead, see what was just around the corner, and then turn back. But as soon as I left the room, I got invaded!

And I froze! I didn't know what to do!

I tried running back into the room I had just left, but it was sealed off.

I tried to use Evacuate and teleport back to the Nexus, but it was disabled.

In the meantime, the Black Phantom had backstabbed me two or three times and I was on the verge of death, so I went into fight-or-flight mode, and turned on him, ferociously! I think he didn't expect that turn of events, as a couple of seconds later, he was hiding behind his shield as I bashed him over and over again, until he died.

I felt... righteous.

I have to remark on some of the things going on in the original .hack games, back with Kite and company dealing with the Eight Phases and Morganna Mode Gone. In this simulated MMORPG of playing a game about playing a game, I had - at first - found it hard to deal with Skeith in the first game even though I was levels over his dungeon. And then...a curious revelation struck me.

He'll lash out at anyone. Why not just hang back and let my party handle this?

So, I just sit there while my allies attack, die, get revived, and repeat...and soon Skeith is dead. Huh... I need to do this when the other games come out. I waited...and they came. Innis was already easy, and Magus uhh...well, he didn't even have Data Drain and he wa ridiculouly easy when I physically blocked his path. Fidchell was identical in difficulty to Innis...which is to say NOT. From then on, Phases were harder, but they weren't unbeatable.

Oh, and uhhh...remember Seymour from FFX? Remember how that idiot's last fight had him with these elemental panels that would keep shooting certain spells? He's entirely easy. Summon an Aeon that corrosponds to the element in use and it cannot die. It becomes a VERY easy battle until the last leg where all the panels reverse...and then you summon the opposing Aeon. It's so easy that it's EMBARASSING!

Also from Monster Hunter 3 U; I went on the Super Ivory Lagiacrus DLC quest online. I was going to wear my Diablos armor with a heavy bowgun but everyone in the room was like "DUDE YOU NEED MORE ARMOR!! LAGIACRUS WILL KILL YOU!!!!" I was reluctant but against my better judgment I switched to my Green Nargacuga armor. It was more upgraded so it had more armor (I was out of armor spheres to upgrade with), but was weak to thunder. The fight went well.... But them me and one other guy both got hit with one lightning spit attack and were insta-killed.....

Despite 2 deaths and a murderously psychotic Lagiacrus we eventually beat it though but that was a lot more worrisome than it should have been...

I get that moment a lot playing through Fire Emblem: Awakening. The moment where you move a weak unit into a seemingly safe spot and then SUDDENLY ENEMY REINFORCEMENTS EVERYWHAR within range of your weak unit:

"Ohgodohgodohgod"
*hit*
*hit down to 1HP*
"Shitshitshitshit"
*dual guard*
*miss*
*miss*
*dual guard*

"...oh thank god."

After which I usually end up in a better position than before somehow.

I've had that happen. Before I was a Forest Hunter in Dark Souls, someone tried to invade me in the forest. He hurt me pretty badly and I ran off a ledge and immediately back up the slope to where I was. The dude was looking out, with his back toward me. I promptly ran up and backstabbed him, which sent him off the cliff and to his death. :D

I guess my two experiences would both be in dark souls with the capra demon and ornstein & smough.

I killed the capra demon on my first try and I dont even think I got hit the entire fight. I walked in, blocked the dogs lunging at me, cut them down and proceeded to ass rape him.

With Ornstein & Smaugh I did almost the whole fight with about twenty or so health left and no flasks. When I got to the fog gate I was already out of flasks but at full health so I figured I would try it out and see how the fight goes rather then walking back to a bonfire. I started out attacking both of them fairly evenly depending on who was closer not really trying to kill one or the other. I dropped Ornstein first and had a slight oh shit moment when Smaugh fully recovered all his health and went super saiyan on me. Then while dodging his first couple attacks I miscounted the number of pillers in the row and accidentally rolled into one and got my face smashed in. I had to do the rest of the fight with almost no health left. I think if he had sneezed on my I would have died.

Oh yeah and I double teamed flamelurker with my buddy using only shields and managed to beat Disgaea 1 without having a single party memeber over level 40 and some as low as 15. For reference on that one I think the final boss is around level 90 or so.

Oh, that's fun. I like to drop items near a cliff and hide nearby. Once they go to see what it is, I run up and kick them off the cliff with the kick attack. :D

Definitely Nyx in Persona 3 FES. "Oh he has 13 forms, omg so OP!"

I preparing for this super boss the entire game so I came into the fight with no less than 11 Somas and various other high level SP and HP items. A Soma completely restores your entire party's health and SP during battle. I had 11 of them.

I had to use only 2 of those Somas throughout the entire fight.

To be honest I was expecting the game to be Persona 4 level hard, P3 is actually slightly easier overall I think. Probably because the game doesn't shower you with Somas after every single boss.

Basically, don't hype up bosses on forums or people like me will go into Paranoid Hording Mode XD

Hah. The game itself puffs up the image for the Lagiacrus. All the NPCs talked about was how fearsome it was. I went into battle with 10 Potions, 10 Mega Potions, 10 Honeys, 10 Herbs and 10 Blue Mushrooms(to combine more Mega Potions if I ran out), 10 Well-Cooked Steaks and all the items you can grab from the Supply Box at the start(3 First-Aid Meds and 3 Rations and 2 Mini Whetstones were the only useful bits I grabbed).

The only healing I ever did was I used two First-Aid Meds. These things are Herb tier, how little they heal you. And I was wearing armor that makes you terraweak to thunder attacks(which didn't really matter since I was never hit).

Games are just about as bad about it as forums. :D

I get this in nearly every shooter ever. I am a pure hoarder in games, and will only use basic guns unless there are 'very special circumstances.' The problem? I never seem to run across those circumstances... Therefore I never seem to ever use any form of explosive/rail gun/mega laser/BFG/ultimate weapon in a shooter ever!

Unless I save the game, use it, and reload...

This means when I complete a game, and have all my good weapons with full ammo left over, I always think: well that wasn't so bad!
I think it's because of games like Doom and Duke Nukem where you HAD to use the best weapons on the final bosses to survive!
