Think Modern Warfare 2 is already controversial?

Well you haven't seen anything yet!

Original video with sound:
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/3626160/modern_wafare_2/
Video with some idiot's commentary:
http://connectedconsoles.com/ps3-New-Modern-Warfare-2-Gameplay-could-spark-more-controversy-.cfm

Personally, I'm OK with this. It's just a game, and this is just part of the game's story. I'm still going to get MW2 and I'm sure I'll love it. It look's like a fantastic game with a very epic (but still hollywoodish) storyline.
I know that some people/groups will be outraged at this, but I feel that this scene is so brutal, graphic, and flat out unfunny (unlike gta right...right?), that it's a huge turnoff to real world violence. It would be hard to legitimately blame it for anything. It's like the reality of terrorism kicks you in the face.

Discuss!

Like I said in the news thread, it seems to me that Infinity Ward has been listening to the people wanting a Nazi campaign.

This is a brilliant idea. It will cause all kinds of controversy and drive sales up, and the people who play it with enough maturity to realize that this sort of thing isn't funny at all will recognize the political statements that the game is making. This is a perfect example of video games growing up.

Well to any gamer this will be fine.
in fact to any human being this should be fine.
people are way to touche' these days.
its a fucking game.
get the fuck over it.
sorry for my hash language however this is something i feel strongly about.
what is the human race coming to.
have we nothing better to do but start a controversy over some fucking pixels shooting some other fuckin pixels?

in the end anyone who is NOT a gamer may find it controversial. in fact this will be held above the head of "violent video games = violent people" argument.

however any twat who decides this is wrong is nothing but a mere idiot and should be shunned from society. get over it. god. some people can be such r-tards. >.>

Japan will not be pleased with your final sentence. I however, am.
I love the idea that we can finally start using games as a politically expressive medium.
I don't see many games doing it.

Wow, I am just about the most un-offendable persom I know, and I have to admit that kind of made me feel a bit sick in my stomach.

I know IW are probably trying to make a point about 'seeing the horror of war up close' or 'challenging the player's morals' here, but there's just something about it that rubs me up the wrong way.

I really don't want to play a game of serious tone that makes me kill innocent people.

They dont do it simply because it would be "controversial"
Its about time some game company grew up and decided its fine if they piss somebody off.
I.E. Respect to infinity ward.

I think you misunderstood me. I was replying to the person above who mentioned plotical statements. I can't explain right now because it'd be real lengthy, but I didn't mean it how you perceived.

If you're trying to offend me with your hyperbolic insults it's pointless, there are worse things in life than the flames of aggresive little internet trolls who take thier nerd rage out on people with a different view than themselves.

If you read my post again (with both eyes this time), you will notice that I said 'in a game of serious tone'.

Running over peds in GTA is funny because it's cartoony and exaggerated, this scene is clearly designed to be a visceral and realistic interactive experience of murdering innocents.

Which to me would be a very uncomfortable experience.

But hey, you're welcome to stew in your dogmatic, single minded views, after all, who needs to discuss anything on a forum when you can just insult people?

Pretty much this. IW know what they're doing, and it's this that pisses me off. I fail to see what this could possibly bring to the story, other than having CoD's name all over the news and boosting sales. It's not going to inspire any real terrorism or anything, but it is tasteless to the extreme and a rather poor attempt at genertaing controversy for controversy's sake.

I don't understand how anything in a video game, which is by definition NOT REAL, could be considered controversial. Unless you're literally eating babies while raping underage women, then it's just a freakin' game. People are too politically correct these days.

Not yet, but when a guaranteed success like Modern Warfare 2 starts shaking things up like this, especially backed up by the success of the earlier one, publishers are going to take notice, and they're going to be substantially less shy about being political.

EDIT:

You might very well be right, but not having played the game yet, we don't know for sure. You say that you don't know what it could bring to the story, but I suspect you say that because you're uncomfortable with the images. Until they're placed in the context of the game's plot, themes, and arguments, I don't think we can condemn it.

This is fair enough, as long as you're saying "I'm not going to play this" and not "Infinity Ward shouldn't be allowed to do this."

you sir, insult me.
Don't mistake me for you're token "trolling nerd" with gratuities amounts of this "nerd rage".

Suddenly you say GTA is funny? since when?
In fact GTA IV has been insulted in multiple instances simply because its to gray, to real, making it a lesser game in comparison to a unrealistically funny game such as saints row.

I'm simply stating that people find things controversial way to easy these days.
Also pointing out that they seem to only do it when the feel like it, making there position a weakened and striped one.

I.E. killing civilians of the Innocent type has been going on forever.
i can name game after game after game where it happens.
yet NOW we decided to be offended?
THAT is pure ignorance.

and as for your "clearly visceral and realistic scene....ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
your taking that from a first off "rumored" video that is so damn low quality its beyond funny.

However I AM NOT a you normal internet twat, i realize you have an opinion and i realize you are completely entitled to it, and i respect you for it.

however you are quite pushing the limits by expecting me to respect your opinion when you so blatantly shoot down my own.

Either way, i mean no harm, merely posting my opinion.
sorry for any misunderstandings .

Sincerely,
you're "typical internet rage filled nerd"

I think that such a visual is meant to shock the player, FPS are all to comfortable with gunning down the masses on their way to grab the red key or pull the lever to lower the bridge. It would seem rather then place the player in a self constructed moral high ground of these are bad people doing bad things, not to say it isn't fun. However it would seem you now are the morally questionable person in an environment with unconventional targets, essentially pulling the plug on the idea of the player being heroic in their actions as we can clearly see not all gun play is for the amusement of the gaming addicts, well kind of...oh who am I kidding we all want to slaughter those annoying petty creatures known as airplane passengers, especially the ones who bring to much luggage for carry on, take up all the overhead space, spend the whole flight sounding as if they're breathing through a snorkel and are way to comfortable to take their shoes off, I say to you Mr Keith say hello to mister high velocity bullet, not that I'm speaking from a personal experience.

Yeah, neither of the videos will play. The first one was removed and the second one is in japanese.
