Thinking about buying Deus Ex

Hi, as the title indicates, I was thinking about getting the original Deus Ex. I was wondering what others thought of it, and more importantly if it would work with windows 7. The second part I'm checking is because I can't get KOTOR to work in win7, and I'm worried that Deus Ex also being an older game might have a similar issue. Thanks in advance, to any responders.

Well I bought Deus Ex: Human Revolution from Steam along with the original and it works fine...Graphics are horrible though. If you can get past that it is pretty good. Not sure how it would work if you buy it from a retailer, I assume Steam had it patched so it would work on new operating systems but buying the disc may require the download of a patch.

I remember struggling to get KotOR to work on my PC. Someone probably has a patch out there that you can download to get it working. KotOR 2 is probably a safer bet though.

The Steam version works on Vista. That much I know.

And it's a great game. :3

It's definitely an older game and it does show in terms of its graphics and voice acting. But, if you can get passed that, you will enjoy it. A good test is how playable you think the original half life is. I played it for the first time last summer and loved it-so it's not just nostalgia talking. I played it on my laptop with windows 7 and had no issues.

I bought it in the steam summer sale for $2.50. And yes, it is worth every penny. Don't let the first level scare you away, though.

The steam version of KOTOR works and KOTOR 2 works as long as its not in program files.

Go steam, it works fine on Win7

Also I heard there was a High Res Texture pack out, won't make it look amazing but more bearable than it was before if you're worried about it :p but it is a great game, desperately waiting for HR

My original 2000 disc copy works on Windows 7, no problems. I ran it as an administrator and in Windows XP compatability mode. It's the greatest game ever made, so this shouldn't even be a question.

Get the following for the best experience:
1. If necessary, get the v1.112fm patch (official patch)
2. Deus Ex: New Vision mod [http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision]
3. Direct3D 10 renderer [http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/]

I just did a play through with this stuff and it looks great.

Deus Ex is a lot more likely to work than KOTOR. Also, yes I highly recommend Deus Ex, it is a very good game. Unfortunately, telling you what's so good about it will probably ruin it so just trust me on this. Also you do have to stick with it. I remember getting it quite a while ago, playing for a little bit and getting bored quickly. I came back to it more recently, got futher and had a lot of fun with it. So yeah, get it.

A Deus Ex mod that makes it look good? I think that might be a bit uncanny for me. I feel that a good looking Deus Ex would ruin my immersion. I mean one of the most recognisable things about it was how incredibly ugly it was.

EDIT: I really want to link Yhatzee's Deus Ex song but I have no idea how, could somebody do that?

Yeah DE should work. Like someone said though you can't let the first mission scare you away. It's definitely the worst part of the game.

And yet Garrett is your avatar...

Anyway, just had a look a couple of the screenshots, is there much difference with New Vision? Because I can't really see it.

OT: Steam version works fine, as everyone's mentioned, and it is one of the best games ever made and everything a heavily plot-driven game should have.

My GOTY disks run in Windows 7 64 bit no problems. If it wasn't already installed on my hard drive I'd be obliged to install it again. As others have said the first level is the worst part, it is there to show you the paths you can take sort of like tutorial. When you finish the original campaign check out The Nameless Mod.

Thief 1+2 are also awesome.

The textures in New Vision are much higher quality. If you're playing with the originals, they'll appear quite blurry and shitty in general when you're anywhere near them. It mostly affects objects and floors/walls/ceilings. Not much was done to people and the like. I certainly felt like it was a noticeable difference, especially combined with the Direct3D 10 renderer which gives you better lighting and a number of other options.

It doesn't bring it up to modern game standards by any means, but it makes it much easier on the eyes in my opinion.

I did see a sort of better resolution in those screencaps but didn't think much of it, still, might check it out now. Thankee...
