Ok, I'm considering getting into MMA, like actual fights UFC style and whatnot.
But, I don't really know anything about it, like what Fighting styles are good in those situations. I have been in fights before, but those were only things like "hey, you stole my butterfinger." *Punches are exchanged, I get butterfinger back*
Just street fights, which, wouldn't get me far in MMA, I know how to punch someone, but I don't know how to stop someone from punching me.

Also, this is my first Thread I've done since joining the escapist. I've waited so long to post a thread because quite honestly, I've been too nervous about it, thinking I'd do something wrong, and upset my fellow escapists, so if I've done anything wrong in this post, its because I'm still new to this kind of thing, as this is the first forum I've ever been a member of.

Anyways, back on topic, I'm just wondering if anybody could give me any advice about things to help me get closer to getting into MMA, like good fighting styles to try, and good workout routines etc. etc.

You could always try Krav Maga. It is basically a bunch of fighting styles duck taped together to make the ultimate fighting style.

My advice: don't.

Unless you are already seriously tough and slightly psycho, you will be wasting your time. Even the amateur fights in MMA and UFC are fucking insane. One of my older brothers has taken it up and he is about to do his first fight - he has years of fighting experience and has been told by his coaches to slice his shins with knives and batter and bruise his legs to kill the nerves, in order to kick more effectively for longer periods of time. I've been to his practise fights in the amateur/semi pro circuit and 99% of the guys there are simply thugs.

Taking up a martial art is fantastic, but from what I've seen I would strongly advise against choosing MMA, especially if you plan on doing it competitively. Don't buy into the hype, it's a load of psycho bullshit.

But that's just me :)

You're really into Krav Maga huh? But its more focused on not dying instead of sport, so isn't suited for MMA at all.

You're going to want to be good at at least two styles, one for stand up and one for ground. I would recommend finding a place that specializes in MMA because it'll save a lot of time and it'll boost your fitness pretty darn quick.

Best of luck buddy, and don't jump in the ring until you're ready =P

From what I have seen of that stuff you just end up with some guys legs wrapped around your head. It seems a bit suss to me.

I'm willing to commit to it, I've seen UFC fights plenty of times, amateur and professional.
I understand it will be brutal, but its just something I feel I would be good at, pain doesn't bother me really, Like, i'm not trying to say "Grr, I'm tough and nothing can hurt me." its just that Pain has never been a big problem for me. I can take it, in large or small doses. Its just something I've always wanted to do, so I'm gonna give it a shot, if it turns out that its way to intense for me, I'll just quit, simple as that.

You will get your head kicked in. You need years of experience and training in serious fighting styles, not just "I have seen UFC and think I would be a rad fighter.

Boxing is probably your best all around style for it, and remember to protect your head and the jab is your money shot, whenever I see a fight on TV it ends up with me yelling at them to try to fix their technique.

I know what I'm getting into, I understand that if I were to just jump into MMA I would get my butt kicked horribly, I've only been in 3 or 4 street fights, Sure I won them all, but I understand that a Street fight isn't on the same level.
I posted this asking for advice On ways to Get ready for MMA, not to get responses that do nothing but state something I already know.

hope you like rolling around with sweaty muscly men... fag... I kid! i kid! Personally, it's not for everyone, hell, i even hate watching it. A buddy of mine is into it though and he says it's absolutely intense with the training. "Arguably harder than military basic training for a fat kid" in his exact words.

Thats easy, spend several years learning different martial arts, boxing, wrestling etc, Then you worry about getting in to MMA fights.
