The Archos 70. Any thoughts / opinions?

There is also an 8GB version, both have microSD slots and a whole mess of other features... Go ahead, convince me one way or another.

I think tablets are a waste. I have a fujitsu lifebook and the power is hampered by the tablet stuff which i never use. Even calibrated my touch function is shit. Tablets are a requirement for my school and this was the laptop most of the people in my class where getting, I wish i could just get a high powered hp or something compared to paying for the extra functionality with the tablet.

I think you really need to specify what you're using it for. That's the only way you're going to get the information you want.

Good point - it'd definitely be a traveling machine, to give the 3 yr. old something to watch on the planes. Otherwise, it'd also do duty as an e-reader and general browser while lounging on the couch.

My only advice - it looks as if there is going to be a variant of Win7 for tablets and a new generation of iPad. Which could mean that prices on tablets will plummet, or something better is on the horizon. Research and make sure that this is the right time to decide to buy one.

What about a netbook or DVD player?
If you're not interested in the touch capabilities of the hardware, I don't really see a reason in getting a tablet.

If you just want a portable browser/ book reader, why not get an iTouch? Its significantly smaller, yes, but when in landscape mode, I find its not too bad. And despite people calling it the "Useless iphone without a phone," its got a pretty nifty battery life without having to wait for calls. I dunno if there's a droid equivelent- smaller would just be much cheaper.

If you do want the touch what-nots, I suggest shopping around at Monoprice. [http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10841]
The prices are incredible. Hardware wise, it lacks some buttons 'n such, but its sturdy, and the performance is good. And its less than $40 for an 8x6 tablet.

I've been very satisfied with my tablet; the only downside is that it doesn't handle two monitors being used simultaneously very well.
