Thinking of getting into Fallout...

I suggest 1,2 and New Vegas. Sure, 3 is more "Fallout" than Vegas in atmosphere and locations but the mechanics are better in Vegas. 1 and 2 have unofficial patches out if you know where to go, like No Mutants Allowed IIRC. Those patches make the game much more bearable to play in this day and age. I like the widescreen mods the most myself.

I played 3 first then went to 1, and I tranferred pretty well. Both one and two hold up pretty well in my opinion, just don't give up in the first few hours of gameplay. It's only like 6 dollars on GOG, so there isn't much to lose.

I'd actually play the original fallout's last. The style of the game in my experience has put people off. Most people who play fallout from number 1 all the way to new vegas, the often don't get past the second fallout, because they don't like it.

I'd start at 3. Go on to New Vegas, then start from the first one. Then when you're comfortable with it, play it through properly.

Fallout 2 was a horrible horrible game, I hope that was a typo and you meant Fallout 3.

Are you kidding me? I hope that was a typo. Fallout 2 is the best Fallout game. EVER.

You fucking get to be a porn star, stab people in the balls, gouge their eyes out and even throw a spear into someone's face. The combat system was so much better than Fallout 3/New Vegas'.

Start with Fallout 1 !
By far the best game in the series and probably the best RPG ever made.

Get the US version (Childern are missing in the UK version), install the latest patch and enjoy.
Here u can find official and community made patches:

No Mutants Allowed is easily the best fan site out there and has all the info/patches/mods you might need.

Fallout 2 is good too. Some consider it better than FO1, some consider it worse.
I personally prefer FO1. All the humour and pop culture references in FO2 often throw you out of the experience.

Fallout 3 is not really Fallout. It's basically a first person shooter with an open world, quests and RPG elements. Combat is boring (whoever came up with V.A.T.S. needs to be shot), characters are not interesting and the overall quality of the writing is shit.

Haven't played New Vegas, but I've heard it's much better than FO3.

OT:-
Fallout 3 is a great place to start.
I liked Fallout 3 more myself, but I'm sure we're all entitled to opinions.

Actually, go with the original first and if you can't stand them, skip on to New Vegas (or FO 3 if you're feeling the need for mediocrity :p )

If you're looking for opinion consistency, Fallout isn't the place to look.

Look around for videos of all of them. Pick which ever one interests you the most.

I've played them all(Except for stuff like tactics and BoS), and I like them all.

Ah, this discussion never grows old :)

Let us know what you thought about the games when you finally manage to figure out where to start.

Oh, and as for my opinion, play them chronologically.

Good choice getting into Fallout, just pick whatever looks interesting to you and read up on the lore. All the games have flaws and portions of the fanbase that hate them.

Start from first Fallout, but be ready for storyline, where no one will help you solve the main quest.

fallout 3 and vegas are like this:

fallout 1 and 2 are like this:

fallout is reminiscent of oblivion while 1 and 2 are like old top-down adventure game with combat similar to chess(sort of).

I played 1 and 2 after i had gotten into the series by playing fallout 3.
New vegas is best played after 1 and 2 since there are lots of references to them.

in short, Fallout 3 is where i got hooked, then i played 1 and 2, then new vegas.

1,2, skip 3 as it's very lore breaking and then play New Vegas.
And whatever you do, DO NOT forget the DLC for New Vegas. It's essential.

I started my fallout adventure in fallout 3 and it's DLC. Everything else I know is from New Vegas and the wiki having never played the first two which I would like to...one day.

Here's how I see it:

Fallout 1 and 2 have excellent stories, but the engine is shit. The combat is sooooooo slow and boring it will literally put me to sleep. I'm not exaggerating, it's truly that boring. Fallout 3 and NV may not be quite that good in the story department but they've still got excellent stories and the fast-paced gameplay more than makes up for the story shortcomings.

My suggestion: Buy Fallout 3 GOTY, Buy NV and all DLC, then just read up on how Fallout 1 and 2 go on the wiki.
Yeah what this guy said too but I'd still play the first two.

My only experience with turn based combat has been "Desktop Dungeons" .It was really interesting for the first 3-4 hours as I was moving ahead, unlocking new modes but then it all started feeling like a maths class where all i was doing was dividing ,multiplying, adding, subtracting numbers in my head. And I have to admit I'm really not that good at it. Since then I havent touched turn based games.

So if you are little like me, staty away from fallout 1 and 2. Fallout 3 I guess will be more like oblivion and oblivion is to me like "WOW!". I got a feel of it when i played at a friends place.
Its so massive. Mix that with a sci-fi apocalypse setting and you get GOTY!

Go Fallout!!!

If you don't mind the fact that they're dated now, start with Fallout then play Fallout 2. Then I'd personally recommend skipping 3 to come back to at a time you're completely finished with New Vegas. It's an okay game but not brilliant, the free roaming of it is fine and some elements of the humour are present but in general Fallout 3 is just an extremely sub par game.

If you can't get into older games (it's cool, some people don't like 'em!) then I'd go with New Vegas first, 3 is okay but it's just nothing special. Oh and if you do try NV first, pay attention to what people say, it's written like a true RPG, they'll give you hints and talking to people pays off but you can wander to your death easily enough. Pay attention to what's going on.
