Both are fine, although third for a cover-system game, of course.

Killzone 2 felt wonky with a first person cover system.

First Person. More immersive, better control. Plus you don't have to look at some dudes back forever. Only exception: Ghost Recon, but hopefully that's going back to First in some way.
Ghost Recon: Future Soldier includes 1st person aiming, but 3rd person view otherwise.

OT: I like to have a variety of games, which means some 3rd and 1st person games. Whichever one I prefer depends on my mood.
That's what the E3 stuff looked like. That seems like it might be a bit awkward though.
It worked well in Rainbow Six Vegas 2, but I'm cautious about ghost recon.

Third person. First person kills the immersion in games for me.
This, this, a million times this!

I have to say that I agree with the Game Overthinker's view on first person view in games. Except I liked Mirror's Edge.

Third person ..over the shoulder. It enables me to see Leon's hips swaying as he saunters around villages. Makes me feel like I'm really physically close to him, like maybe he can feel my breath on his neck, or I can smell his hair. Speaking of which, he needs a more revealing alternate costume.
o_O..

ok..then..

OT:

it depends on the kind of setting, if say, the game in question focuses more on how to get through a level than straight up murdering third person

if i'm going in to kill like a bad-ass first person :D?
Don't be alarmed, your response is the correct one :p.
Eh, only so if you're male I suppose. Which you aren't. :/
Me, I love both. In Sauerbraten my custom playermodels are slightly shorter than the originals, which is useful because the original one's head gets in the way of the crosshair in thirdperson mode. With the new one, I can see fine. I'm pretty indecisive, do I want to see my custom playermodel or custom gun models? xD

First person, by far. There are some emotions 3rd person just can't do because of the way the perspective is behind the character. Just see a sunrise in a TES game and you'll agree. First person just feels more as if you're seeing the view yourself.

3rd person is obviously good for cover-based shooting which has a certain type of realism, but that's the only thing it's got going for it.

If I have to use guns of any sort, I choose first person every time, no doubt.
But if there's more jumping/acrobatics than shooting, I choose third person so I can see my feet.
Also, I find the first person view to be much more immersive.

I've always prefer 3rd. I don't like the weird depth perception and no preriferal vision of first.
This is pretty much why I prefer 3rd person perspective. I can't bear the lack of peripheral vision. The whole tunnel vision, turning your entire character thing drives me screwy!
Plus FP makes me paranoid that something is behind me. Like when you get shot and you have no idea where you are being shot at from.

first person... unless it's gears or games similar to quake 3 (jumpy jumpy bunnyhopping insanity shooters)

Either or. They can have identical controls so there's no real excuse to choose 1st just because of that.

Personally I like to see more games have both, like Star Wars Battlefront does.

If you're going 3rd person though, just remember to give your interiors high ceilings. It's pretty damn important.

I like third person, first person ruins the immersion for me, because of the whole my neck is cemented still so I cannot glance around without turing my body.

Tom Clancy games are good at making 3rd person feel imersive, infact if done well 3rd can be more imersive than 1st. And 1st can be messed up too just look at mirrors edge.

Third-person simply cannot match the immersion of a good first-person shooter. Seeing the world through the eyes of your character heightens the experience and games like Half-Life 2 or Bioshock -- both of which rely heavily on atmosphere -- would lose their brilliance in third-person.

The only circumstance where I'd use a third-person perspective is in an RPG; so I could see the customisations I have made to my character. A third-person shooter seems ridiculous to me.

depends on the game. example: if there's any sort of platforming, for the love of god, it better be third person.

Mirror's edge is the most perfect first person that has ever existed -- you actually have hands that wave around as you run and are there when you aren't pressing a button or relaoding your gun or whatever and legs that you can see when you look down.

This extremely well done 1st person view coupled with the lack of HuD makes it the most immersive game I've ever player.

First person is superior in every way, and mirror's edge shows that this is especially the case for platforming games -- if more were like this it would be a better world to live in lol :)

I prefer third-person when it's implemented well, but what I really want to see more of is a combination of both. I'm not sure what other games did this, but when I had the misfortune of renting the game adaptation of Quantum of Solace, the one thing I actually liked was that you played the whole game in first person until you took cover. After you got into cover, the camera would swing back into third-person so you could see where you were and if you were adequately protected.

It worked really well in my opinion, because it meant you could do fast-paced run and gun stuff in first person but still have a viable stealth option or cover-based option without having to worry about how much of your body is actually visible.

It was supposed to be interpreted as just being creepy, regardless of gender. Presuming to have a camera angle preference based on such ridiculous parameters is kind of scary, to anyone.
