Not really amazing at all, but the nostalgia for FFVII is appreciated.

I'd love to see FFVII remade by Square-Enix, to current-gen standards--or, more likely, setting the standard for next-gen production values.

I don't remember Tifa being there...
She wasn't - considering this is basically just fan service I guess they wanted ol' big boobs in it from the start.

Square is too busy taking away the open world, the control from the player, coming up with esoteric names (preferably weather related), strange esoteric character designs and coming up with new (battle/character) 'systems' to really understand what it really was that real fans wanted.

An involving storyline, user friendly controls (stick with what worked: FF6-10's systems, as much as I hated X I can admit it had a great battle system, though not character system.. the sphere grid was pointless, counter intuitive and mapped out to a straight line, aaanyway tangent..) a believable yet interesting world/setting, the ability to explore it and interesting characters that evolved through playing the game as the story unfolded.

I really don't understand the Japanese obsession with making new 'systems' each time... why they don't just stick to what works and was enjoyed.

If you remake it you're only going to realize the game was not as good as you remember. It had its time and place and that was many years ago. Most people remember it fondly because it was their first introduction to RPGs or Japanese storytelling, not because it was some amazing game.
Not always the case yes sometimes a game is not as good as you remember in my own experience bubble bobble springs to mind but in other cases I have found the game to be much better than I remember most notably Ocarina of Time.
Also you dont remember something fondly if you didnt think it was amazing just because it was your first experience of something, usually you would just forget it if you were unmoved either way or remember it as a load of crap i.e Mario Kart for the Snes was my first kart racer game (was it the first ever?) and I have no fond memories of that because I bloody hated it (except battle mode) whereas I cant remember my first rpg or platform or shooting game because it did not prove memorable.

Now OT: That is not a remake of the intro it dosent even have Barret,Biggs,Wedge and Jessie for a start and what the hell is tifa doing there? Taken as a fan recreation and re-imagining of the starting area as an out of game prototype it is reasonably impressive but first person does not work and as others have said the animation is incredibly stiff still I enjoyed watching it.
Now if only someone would remake the full game in ps2 or ps3 graphics, seriously if Nintendo owned this game it would be on its fourth reiteration by now.

I don't recall FFVII being quite so awkward in the animation department. Also, is one of those Shinra mooks using a M41A pulse rifle from Aliens? That's new.
Are you sure? I remember it being pret-ty awkward...

I can't think of a single remake that I've bought that I've actually enjoyed more than the original

Anyone who plays Resident Evil can tell you that the original had an outstanding remake on the gamecube.

As for the video in question, If it was a student/learner thing I'd say it was an admirable effort. If it came from a real dev, I'd say they got lazy.

Personally I don't want a remake. I just want this in HD with models that actually look like people. Is that so much to ask?

I think we've seen over the years that remoakes of popular games is generally a bad idea...

So long as they're just paying homage i don't see anything wrong with it (Though Square Enix might), but yeah... the animations are pretty bad. Not that i think you should expect much when they say it was made so they could learn how to make video games.

I might just keep an eye out for these Studio Paint people in the future.

Instead they're up to number 14. Or should I say XIV.
Pretty sure he means the fourth reiteration of Final Fantasy VII, not the fourth Final Fantasy overall.

really Escapist? You changed it to Amazing(ish) well you sure changed your opinion fast.

You people really need to understand, this is a hand full of people doing this as a school project, yes its not perfect, but they don't have a few million dollars, and a few hundred people working on it.

How would you people feel if i came into your school while you were trying to draw Mario in art class and i told you how shitty it was, and then told you to stick to booger eating kid.

Indeed 14 very different games just listen to the bitching about which one is the best and worse for proof of that generally things are changed characters, battle systems, plots, gameplay devices even if the last one proved popular whereas Nintendo much less so they find a formula that works and stick within it sure there is innovation within their template but it is the same template can you imagine the chaos that would erupt if they changed link in the next zelda game with an almost identical character but he was blue carried an axe and was called clive. Note I am saying template not genre they are two different things oh and I am not complaining about Nintendo either.

Aside from the jerky animations and Tifa's boobs being way too big, it's not bad for a fan remake. It will be interesting to see where it goes.

Wonky animations aside, I want to actually play what I'm seeing! O_O

Also, I've been thinking about ways to mix up FFVII's over world map problem that many people talk about as being one of the reasons a modern revamp wouldn't take. NEVER did I even consider the possibility of a first-person view. THAT was all kinds of genius that I am actually straight baffled.

Maybe Square will take notice that this demand from fans is not going to die down. Sadly, based on their track record, I just KNOW it won't be as smart as what the people in this video have done.

Good show! I know I'll be starting up a new game of FFVII after school today!

It was kinda cool. There was a nice touch with the wanted posters and Zach appearing in the life-stream. If they're gonna make it into an actual game, I'd worry about its potential future. I seem to recall Square pulling the plug on a similar project with Chrono Trigger.

If they actually do make this an actual game, they need to work on the animations a lot and add in a combat system.

I said it once and I'll say it again. FFVII should never be remade.
Even as a fan of the game, I don't really disagree. I have my doubts as to whether a remake would do the original justice. Could Square resist changing combat and other iconic systems? Would the iconic systems even stand up to the test of time unchanged? Could a game that features the hero cross dressing, massive amounts of blood, and cursing still get a Teen rating? Oh, and Barret and Cid and their "dialog"...

I have plenty of reasons to doubt a remake.

Neat, I don't deny that it needs work, (not to mention what the hell was up with the Zack cameo...), but still, not TOO bad...

People should stop waiting for a FF7 remake, though, at least something to "Advent Children"'s standards.
