Apparently Gary Oldman is slated to star in the Robocop remake. Playing the role of the Scientist that turns Alex Murphy into the Robocop, as a big fan of the first two Robocops and Gary Oldman this is awesome news to me.

Wasn't Robocop meant to be a sort of satire of OTT action films though?

I love Robocop though and Gary Oldman is one of my favourite actors.

And of rampant consumerism and contemporary American Cold War culture. If they take that out, or at least change the Cold War culture to today's post-9/11 culture, I will be sorely disappointed. It's just not RoboCop without it.

But at least Gary Oldman is a good choice. Then again, Liam Neeson was in Battleship. Everyone makes mistakes eh?

I wish they'd stop doing fucking remakes. Robocop was a good film, why bother??

Pisses me off more than remakes of foreign films. Hell, at least they have the 'don't like subtitles' excuse :/

People will say it's exploring a new avenue by giving a backstory to the doctor. How long before they decide that we need a backstory for Mr Kinney, leading up to the point he was totally owned by ED-209?

If there's one thing they shouldn't do it's try and copy the same level of satire as the original movie; Next thing we know we'll end up with another Robocop 2. *shudder*

I'm not a fan of a Robocop remake, but if they do atleast have them try something totally different. Like a cyborg body horror movie, or something. Seriously, how many movies have truly explored the horror of being part man, part machine?

My thoughts exactly. If this continues, we'll be seeing remakes of remakes being made in the near future.

1. I love ED-209 - it's one of my favourite movie characters ever. 2. Oh my god, they killed Kinney! You bastards!

Quite how they made a stop-motion psychotic robot that growls like a lion when he's piseed off, seem quite so appealing, is beyond me!!

Probably my favourite robot in movie history. Forcing him to be as loyal as a puppy in Robocop 3 was just embarrassing!

That's pretty awesome news, Gary Oldman always does a good performance.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

As well as an allegorical Jesus story.
Robot Jesus that is.

God I love me some Robocop, 'I'd buy that for a dollar!', 'Tastes like Baby food', and the best one

'Can you fly Bobby'?

Awesome, I don't approve of the remake but at least Gary Oldman is a good actor

On a side note that scene where Robocop storms that drug factory is the single most expressive scene from an 80's action film.

It epitomises everything that was great about 80's action, It has great one liners and every guy that gets shot either flings himself over a ledge or goes down holding the trigger on an automatic weapon thereby spraying everybody else in his immediate vicinity

That is correct, only no one beyond the director understood that it was a joke. We just basked in the awesome.

I was abotu to say I couldnt quite see him as "robocop" but that makes sense

he's really cool

its funny, there's this movie called "True Romance" that has gary oldman (as a dreadlocked pimp no less) and Brad pitt in it before they got famous

To be fair this remake is going to focus more on the transition between man and cop and the theme of reincarnation. Exactly why they're casting a great actor to be the scientist responsible.

Not sure I'd say Oldman was an unknown in 1993. You also make True Romance sound like an indy flick. It involved Tarantino as he was becoming a known name and was directed by Tony Scott. A chap who directed Top Gun and one of the Beverly Hills Cop movies before True Romance in addition to being the brother of the bloke who directed Alien (roll on Prometheus!!!).

probably true for people who know about films

I was just surprised I had never heard of it, since it was part of a "Tarantino pack" that included Jackie brown, pulp fiction, and kill bill Vil.1/2 (but strangly not resovour dogs...I assume that was because of the rights or somthing)
